Anyone know what’s going on? In mid-December, you could get a PSA 10 for $500. Three or four days ago, they were low $600s. They’ve skyrocketed since and there are 7 auctions ending tonight over $800.

With over 5,400 PSA 10s in the pop report, that’s $4.2 million (yeah, I know it doesn’t really work like that as there likely isn’t a market for 5400 of them at $800...). Seems nuts without any obvious reason for the 60% increase in barely a month.

Yes, it’s called Manipulation. It’s the same person buying them all. They went from $700 this morning to $800 this afternoon to $900 this evening. Probstein has 6 closing tonight with a 3 feedback bidder pushing them all!! This is incredible prevalent in the hobby anymore.

Same thing happened with the Bowman Chrome Trout where the guy in Vegas was buying all of them up in low numbers and high grades - card went from being a $2200-2800 card to over $6-8k due to his purchases. As great as Trout is as a player his rookies are priced for perfection.

Mike Trout is obviously a great ball player, but there is still a long way to go to see if he gets the acclaim he is getting with his card prices. Less than 80 RBI's the last two years, Nice avg of .310 the last two years, 36 HR's the last two years - Very good. His team has a losing record for the last 3 years. "0" post season series wins, ever. "0" post season wins, ever.

Compare him to Tom Brady, 9th super bowl appearance on the way. 8 consecutive afc championship games. 5 super bowl rinsgs. The most playoff wins ever. The card market acts like Trout is some how the Tom Brady of the baseball card world. Not sure what the "Trout" investors are seeing. So far he is Don Mattingly, without being in New York, which isn't bad, but it's not Tom Brady., it's not Peyton Manning, it's not Manny Ramirez, It's not Kevin Durant.

Surely there is SOMETHING to be said for Trout having almost double the WAR from 2012-2018 of the second best player (Donaldson). According to WAR, Mattingly's best year is the only one he had better than Trout's worst (full season). Trout looks more like Bonds than Mattingly.

Trout - 0 playoff wins, 0 series wins, 0 world series appearances, doesn't play in New York. Mattingly had all of this except he did play in New York. See Mickey Mantle/Derek Jeter cards for why it matters that you play in New York.

Trout is currently playing in obscurity, his services in a different market might prove interesting.

It is based on the expectation that he and Bryce Harper lead the Phillies to three or four World Championships.

    fish outta water?

I would imagine that fish are happier in the Pacific Ocean, than they are in the Delaware River ;)

Mike Trout seems like a normal, low-key guy, who doesn't like alot of media attention. Philadelphia and the East Coast media machine may prove more than he cares for (and yes, I do know he was born and raised in New Jersey). Also, Philadelphia sports fans, as good as they are, are known for not being very forgiving.

Seems like a market correction taking place... A number of these have been sitting at $699 BINs, so I wonder if the razz idea floated above, or something like it, led to someone snatching a bunch of these at very high prices in a short period of time. Will be interesting to see if they come down to the mid/low 600s (or lower) in the coming week or 2...

Trout is a player who is good at a lot of things but great at one, OBP. His WAR numbers are given a bump because he plays center field. if he played in boston, and had to play right because a superior fielder was already in center, his WAR would not be as sparkling as it is now.

I know trout is a very very good player, but other than his OBP, I just do not see the trancendent player that is raved about everywhere. unpopular opinion, I know

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

The 2011 Topps Update Trout RC is a perfect storm for eBay shenanigans. Its a huge pop card and many collectors own multiple PSA 10s/BGS 9.5s & 10s which they bought at prices well under current market value. It makes sense for a guy who bought 10 PSA 10s back in 2013 at $50 a pop to occasionally place an $800 bid on one or two to get the ball rolling on a "run up" like this. Truthfully, if these bidders are paying for the cards, I don't have a problem with it at all. I am highly suspect that this is/will be the case, though.

Previous legitimate prices surges with this card were often precluded by jumps in auction results from the Gold /2013. I am seeing results from the past few days still in the $2500 range (where its been for a while now). This makes me very skeptical that theres a legitimate "explosion" going on right now.

But then again what the heck do I really know anyway....

Always looking for tougher PSA 10's of Nolan Arenado, Alex Bregman, Mookie Betts, Francisco Lindor, and Mike Trout.
