1986D Jefferson Nickel Reverse. What happened to the I ??????

The I is faded. Or polished. Or grease error. Weird looking. Look like it says Un Ted.

    Looks like the "I" in the die got filled with something.

    @Timbobb You are getting the hang of it!

    One more thing to consider. PMD, i.e., something hit the coin (accidentally or purposely) and smashed the letter. The closeup pics looks like smashed moved metal.

    I disagree. There is no evidence of damage to the letter.

    I am probably wrong but looks like the metal of the “I” overlaps/moved over the “N”, there is a little crack from the bottom third of the left side of “I” that lead me to conjecture “moved metal.”

    If not then more grease or something. LOL

    Photo of hole coin if possible to better see whats needs to be addressed.
