Very nice !!!
Odd how the current auction description states that it does not
match up with the plate coin in the book.
What is a Miller plate coin?
Ask Wayne Miller he lives in Montana.
Yes, it is odd that they think the coin isn't the one in the Miller book. I assume you have to have some proof of provenance when you submit a coin to the third party grader. Oh, a plate coin, by the way, indicates one that was used to illustrate an item in a book. I've written Mr. Miller with some questions, hoping to solve that mystery. The bottom line is the coin is a nice one.

Wayne Miller wrote two books on Morgan and Peace silver dollars.
In the books he pictured many of his coins from his collection. When
he decided to sell his collection it was one of the top 2-3 collections
of dollars at the time. A plate coin is a coin that belonged to Wayne
or a top collector and was pictured in one of his books.
When I am home on Tuesday I will compare the Miller book to this coin. The coins also came with a letter from Steve Ivey I believe, does the coin come with that?
Nothing from Steve Ivey came with the coin, just the description on the holder.

The letters I am sure are very rare. I have seen 2 of them but the owner would not like me sharing them here. It is on Steve Ivey letterhead, signed by Wayne Miller and then notarized below. It states the coin date and lot in the sale. They are dated 1978.
For a DMPL dork like me they are real cool stuff.
I will add the coins that go with the letters are PCGS graded, no note on the holders about the provenance.
Nice piece plate coin or not.
appears to be a match
It is a nice coin and I have enjoyed owning it for 6 years.

Here's a better representation of the reverse.

I will have the original auction catalog from the sale of Wayne Millers dollars (and the Hoagy Carmichael collection a dear friend of Bix Beiderbecke) soon. I wonder now if this 1881 was pictured there and someone considered it to be a plate coin as a result?
Louis Armstrong
I have the 1986 catalog now, but the photo's in that catalog make all the dollars look clean cheeked and mark free. The written description fits the coin I have for sale and must assume the "plate coin" designation came from it's appearance in this catalog.

I found a small spot under the eagles right wing on the auction catalog photo and this matches the spot on the 1881 in the Heritage auction. So it's a plate coin from the Wayne Miller sale in 1986.

Heritage updated the description to say it is the plate coin.....nice!
