As to the OP's question, a 1942 cent struck on common brass alloy - 85% Cu, 15% Zn - would be a foreign planchet; the normal US planchet was actually low-zinc brass with an alloy of 95% Cu and slightly less than 5% Zn -- almost no tin.

How do you know it is brass, you can’t go by the colour.
The only way to know for sure is to have a XRF test done on it.
