Greetings from a board and registry newbie

Hello! I've been haunting these boards for a couple of months now to pick some free numismatic education and finally wanted to extend my greetings since I will be posting my first registry set of early Jefferson proofs in a matter of days. Still several coins to upgrade, but, we all have to start somewhere, particularly with a budget the likes of mine! There certainly is no need for Mr. Wohlforth and Mr. Corso to worry. I hope I can join you from time to time for some discussions. It seems like a great group of fine numismatists hang out here ... Regards, Randy

  • Welcome! Please just call me Carl, forget about that mister stuff image

I look forward to another proof Jefferson collector. Perhaps someday there will be enough of us to petition the US Mint and other powers to change the nickel design. I think that would bring new interest into the proof Jeffs. Also I could stop buying new ones image
  • I just noticed that proof Jeffs are on the list to be weighted in the future. The interesting thing is there will be two early proof Jeff sets, one with varieties, another without. Now Frank and I have the '39 reverse of '40 and also the '40 reverse of '38. Are there other varieties that will be added? Any guesses? I've purchased a '51 DDO but it seems very minor, you really need a glass to notice it. I can't see adding that one...
  • A grand welcome to you. Hope you enjoy and benefit from the boards as much as I have!

          Hello RGL.

I'm a relative newbie myself. Nice group of collectors here.

        2. Hey Randy.....Welcome. Another Jefferson Proof Guy around here makes it perfect. What Carl said is interesting regarding the redesign and adding new coins to the set......I see a point where new sets must be made up to add more "room". No competition here; my set is easy to read, one more coin and I should end up at about 65.8, giving me number 11 for a while. I am going to put the set on ice so I will be easy to pass by. Good luck and lets hope no one notices the low mintage numbers........

          Welcome Randy,
One can really learn alot by being here. Also some of the best deals happen on the B, S, & T board.

        5. Carl.....Regarding the two early Proof Jeffersons sets, one with and one without varieties. Can you have one coin entered in both? There are alot of Jefferson Late Date Proof collectors out there......it would be fun to have a 1938 to date proof (and circulated) set. How about a 100% complete set (circs and proofs). This could apply to all series. Wow!!!! Am I full of it today..........

          Enjoy your coins.......

Thank you, all, for the very warm welcome. No, I have not posted my registry set yet, I am still awaiting the arrival of a few recent purchases. Not that $$$ is the motivation, but Carl is right, the Jefferson nickel would appear to be the first of our circulation designs in line for a makeover and the current prices on these early Jeffs will be bargains when the series ends. The prices are ridiculously low on many coins given the populations, particularly on brilliant proofs. Look at the 57 PR-68, for example. Only 15 coins in 68 with none higher and it's a $40 coin! Among non-cameos, only the '51 is scarcer in 68. I love Jeffs, but is time for a change. (Now, if we could bring back the Indian Head five-cent ... my first love and completed set. It's only F/AU, but I am proud of it. I'm going to need to find quite a bit more money to start socking away BU 21-S and the like ...) At any rate, thanks again for the kind reception and I look forward to our discussions. Randy
        9. I am using one coin in several sets. For example my '42-P Jeff is in my proof Jeff set as well as in some type sets.

There are both MS and Proof sets so I see little need to combine them. Especially considering I don't collect those MS ones image Frank Corso would be #1 all time finest in that set, particularly if it included varities...
        10. Welcome!

Carl & Co., aside from the two reverse varieties, are there enough proof varieties to warrant a separate set? There are plenty of proof Jeff double dies (witness the 39 listed by Fivaz & Stanton and fine new DD book by Wexler and Ribar, which I highly recommend), but they are fairly obscure.

            3. Yeah, I agree that 2 early proof Jeff sets seems like overkill. I'm OK with the current set where the 2 reverse ofs are optional.
