Yes it looks harshly sanded and dirt is embedded on the nickel.
Looks corroded and damaged.
Not a happy nickel. I think Godzilla but on it in a giant fortune cookie. The hunt continues. Peace Roy

And the S on the back looks like it is higher than normal.
Silver? Silver nickels were minted from 1942-1945.
Do the ring test. Silver has a distinctive sound.
