Can we have a thread to discuss the upcoming AMA discussion thread?

BlindedByEgoBlindedByEgo Posts: 10,754 ✭✭✭✭✭

I guess we'll find out.

I'm looking forward to reading a civil but on-point discussion.

Thoughts?

"Ask me anything" session upcoming, like @spark64 pointed out.

I tried to make the thread title even more circular, but failed.

I'd love to have PCGS CoinFacts cover everything the Pop Reports cover, such as Civil War Tokens and So-Called Dollars.

So it's pretty clear that discussing this ahead of time is not all that interesting.

I wager there will be several threads started about this!

I appreciate how she got ahead of the game on that thread/post and laid out that it was for questions only and that "jokesters" would have to bite their tongues or get a temp (or more) ban. Given some of the folks here, I could see them being on that AMA discussion and trying to be funny and derailing things.

I'm looking forward to hearing what PCGS is thinking as 2019 comes along....

One question I hope someone asks is whether Mr. Charville foresees PCGS ever moving to a 100 point grading system. I hope not but his opinion/thoughts are a LOT more pertinent than my hopes...

It’s already been stated both by Mr. Charville and past PCGS presidents that they will not push for the 100 point grading scale.

I think this would need to first be successful in China, where it is the official grading scale, before it is even contemplated here. There’s no guarantee it will even be successful there.

How does one access it live or post questions?

Look at the locked thread up top about it. The thread will be unlocked and that is where it will take place.

Actually, this thread could be used over the next couple days to vet questions people might want to ask and make more efficient use of the actual "AMA" window. Questions can either be refined for precision or even pre-answered if it was already addressed, in the case of the 100-point scale.

I think that is a great idea. I'd like to find out if there's a plan to lengthen the list of recognised VAM varieties... Seems that this would expand PCGS's market, with a very solid body of attribution work already in place.

Although this has somewhat been addressed already, the topic of

    1) variety attribution accuracy

Is a huge one. In addition,

    2) accurate CoinFacts image editing for varieties

Both are important and should be as reliable and efficient as Variety Vista. Getting these two issues under control would further solidify the leading TPG role.

    3) an avenue of recourse or warranty on misattributed or incorrectly denied Variety submissions.

    Edit for grammar.

The whole thing seems like an invitation to the exit/banning. I want to ask when the grading will return to normal, but I doubt they would appreciate that one.

The easy response to this is to ask what you mean by normal or state that different people have different interpretations of normal. Since you don't have a chance to clarify the question, you need to frame it differently. "What measures does PCGS currently take and plan on establishing to reduce what the marketplace perceives as inconsistent grading over time?" Assuming that's what you meant by normal.

I think that John's framing of the question makes it unbammable. Wording a question in an aggressive or accusatory manner would be counter-productive.

It is clear that a great swath of PCGS customers at all levels feel that current grading standards are outside the expected norms represented by both past results and other grading companies. One way or another this needs to be addressed. It will be very interesting to me to read the questioning and the answers to this issue.

Excuse me if I am being obtuse, but by "current grading standards are outside the expected norms" are you thinking they are too loose or too tight. I have seen where people arguing both ways on these boards lately.

Not obtuse - I was intentionally equivocal.

I suppose the point of those questions (if eventually asked and from whatever viewpoint) will be primarily to make the questioner feel as though their concerns have been heard.

I would think that marketplace confidence and stability would be of primary concern to all involved.

I think it would be very useful and insightful to get Mr. Charville's thoughts on market grading, how it has evolved, and is it really the best approach for the industry and hobby going forward.

Holding questions until the actual AMA is more about creating a “live” event than anything else.

I’m already practicing my rhetorical and frustrating answers...

All the more reason for us to practice getting our questions worded to mitigate those kinds of responses. Hey, other mods, can we get this thread hidden from Brett?

“How would I know the answer to that?! I don’t even officially start until January 2nd!”

I'm glad it is being closely "controlled" and the rules spelled out ahead of time.

I'm going to suggest that next time a discussion be opened two days before: What would you like to ask the CEO. Then he can pick what he wishes to answer and prepare responses for the time he is online.

I'm curious about how the format and follow up will be handled. Perhaps, the next time it will be as simple as the way Ms. Boyd comes into a discussion and leaves a post. Then he can pop into the forums at any time.

On one of the forums I'm on, the mods comment regularly to discussions as if they were only members. One big family.
