Here we go again, this time with Roger Clemens

I have written a couple of articles about the Cal Ripken Rookies and trying to understand why the cards sell for what they do, even though some of the cards are much harder to find based on pop. Clemens is the same way.

Hardest to find in 10

1) 1985 Topps Tiffany (45) His number 1 card by far
2) 1985 Leaf - Second most vauable (46)
3) 1985 Fleer - (149)
4) 1985 Topps - (297)
5) 1985 Donruss - (411)
6) 1984 Fleer - (506)

Sell prices

1) 1985 Topps Tiffany
2) 1985 Leaf
3) 1984 Fleer
4) 1985 Topps
5) 1985 Fleer
6) 1985 donruss

Much like the Ripken Fleer card, the 1985 Fleer Clemens card isn't getting alot of love even though it seems to be much harder to find one. The 1985 Topps card sells for about $75 more and the 1984 Fleer card (over triple the number of 10's) Sells for double. The leaf card is selling for around $750, that seems to be about right or maybe could be a little higher ($1,000). The Regular topps card at $375 or so seems about right maybe could be slightly higher $400 - $450 range. The Fleer card last sold for $300, based on these other cards, seems really low. The fleer 1985 card should be selling for at least the 1984 Fleer card at $650. Definitely should be at least $150 more than the regular Topps.

I know someone is going to cite the fact that the real "fleer rookie" is the update and that hurts the 1985. But that wouldn't explain the donruss card that sells for around $125. No 1984 Donruss and less of these than the 1984 Fleer.

    It's supply AND demand.

Maybe it's the Fleer brand? Ripken, Clemens, Mattingly, Sandberg, Gwynn. The Fleer card is harder to obtain in 10 than some issues but sells lower. The 1984 and 1985 Fleer wax boxes however, hold their own, huh?

It seems that maybe for investment purposes, one could become a buyer of 85 fleer as they seem priced a bit low compared to pop.

It seems the ship has sailed on the 85 tiffany. There is another one listed right now with 3 days to go and it is up to $4800.00. That card has hit the stratosphere. I wonder if the new 80's Beckett has had an effect? It has a n article about the tiffany sets. I know it's the first Beckett i have purchased in years.

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

I see no reason why the 85 Fleer should sell for the same price as the 84. The Update set is just miles ahead of the 85 Fleer issue in terms of scarcity of the card and much more iconic. The population totals have some impact but with there being 149 of them that is plenty to go around.

There was a time when it was super low pop and sold for a ton but that is no longer the case. I have always loved the image and think Roger looks like a total bad a++ but there is one that came out the year before that just so happens to include cards of Puckett and Gooden and so many like me grew up dreaming of owning those cards where as we all had copies of the 85 Fleer in some condition.

'85 Fleer Clemens is one of my favorite '80s cards.

The 84 Fleer Update is an iconic set. If you were around back then it was the set to have....and you would have to pay for it. I think that for a lot of people in my shoes, just the idea of 84 Fleer Update brings back so many great memories. I would much rather have the 84 than the any of the 85's...including the Tiffany.

There are quite a few 85 Donruss factory sets where the cards come out of those little bricks in pristine condition. This may have something to do with the lower value for that card.
