I just went through my purchases this year and actually spent more than I realized. I was right around 9k. This doesn't take into account my selling so my net outlaw on the hobby was actually lower than this.

I sold a few big items so I am sitting on some dry powder and will probably spend big this year between auctions and the National.

Planing a mix of 50’s HOF cards (Mantle, Aaron, Mays, Clemente),
70’s stars like Bench, Ryan, and Rose...
86 Fleer Jordan rookie PSA 9
some 70’s unopened stuff - 71 wax pack PSA graded, 75 and 76 racks, and maybe a few other years.

I would like to pickup a '64 Mantle PSA-8.5. I have been watching Triple SSS's '64....great color, registration, centering, and corners. Print mark is the only flaw keeping it out of a 9 holder. I can live w/small print mark considering other qualities. My second choice is a Bowman '53 Mantle PSA-8. Of course...I would bump a price category w/the '53 purchase.

Thank goodness...the wife doesn't know my handle!

I'm in grad school full time, so I don't have time to sell like I usually do. I don't buy if I can't sell first, so it's going to be a slower year. 2018 has been fairly slow too, but I've been successful.

I agree so I am going to slow down, focus on filling holes and getting everything I already have organized...I am going to drop down from your 5-10k level in '18 to the 2.5-5k level in '19.....

This is dependent on three things.

    1) Able to add to my '51 Ringside Boxing set as trying to jump up from #3 depends on if the cards come to market - budgeting $7,500
    2) Hunt for a great Michael Jordan Game Used/Photo matched Jersey - budgeting $100,000
    3) Purchase an autographed Babe Ruth PSA/DNA official issued card - budgeting $20,000

I hope an economic downturn pushes collectible prices down as people dump items or less money flows into this market.

The biggest lesson I've learned in this hobby, and in life, is that if you have a strong conviction, you owe it to yourself to see it through. Don't sell yourself, or your investments, short. Unless the facts change. Then sell it all.

I am not an economist, but looks like we are heading for another economic downturn, which means great buy opportunities for 2019 and perhaps 2020.

I am looking to get a 1996 Kobe Topps Chrome refractor in PSA 9, a 2009 Topps Chrome refractor Steph Curry in PSA 9, and a 2000 Playoff Contenders Championship auto Tom Brady in PSA 8. If I get the Brady I will most likely sell $25k in cards using PWCC to offset the cost. Will keep my eye out for any PSA 9 Brady RCs I need but those are few and far between at this point. I will be buying 2009 Trout auto RCs in PSA 9 and 2011 Topps Updates Trout variations I don't have in PSA 9. I will continue to look for Kershaw and Alex Ovechkin auto RCs in PSA 9 that I don't have.

I may start looking for Andrew Luck auto RCs in PSA 9. If he stays healthy, I think he will end up being the best QB from the 2010-2020 draft classes.

I normally have a monthly budget of $1500 - $2500 - I will pick a target in January for the year - and put aside ~$10k at the beginning of the year for higher priced purchases, ie things that would exceed my monthly budget.

Biggest decision for me will be whether or not to sell off some cards and unopened. I have some cards I don't really care that much about, mostly obscure 70s HOFers in football & basketball, that I am thinking about selling.

I can probably finish my ‘52 set at right around 2k, the few big cards will take up a chunk of that but the rest I know I can piece together fairly cheap

It all depends on which cards are offered for sale this year.

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

This is really how it works for me too. When you collect in a more niche part of the hobby you have to just play it by ear. The four most expensive cards I purchased surfaced this year and there would have been no way to predict I would have been able to buy them to start the year. Hopefully some cool stuff pops up next year!

I have no idea how the year will take shape. I have some focus areas, but they are not urgent areas that need to be finished this year or even in the next 5 years. My patience is my virtue; I know what I want and I'm willing to wait until I find the right one. It's never been about accumulation for me as much as acquiring the right one that I'll want for the rest of my life and my son's inheritance.

5k for me. Went big for my budget this year adding 71 Thurman 8, Jordan rookie PSA 9 and a 56 Mantle. Love another shot at a 71 pack or rack.

With the current Executive Office chaos, global slowdown, trade war, etc. I don't see how 2019 is going to be a good economic year and 2020 probably worse. I'm keeping my powder dry to try to get some mid-grade football rookies that I anticipate will decline in price. I did well in the 2008-11 economic downturn and this one probably won't be as deep, but still bad.

seeing my last pick up was Nov 2017
Because 1998 Pinnacle Certified was never officially released, each player in the Epix set had a missing version that was supposed to be inserted in Pinnacle Certfied packs. However, the PBF introduced these missing Epix Moment, Season, Play, or Game versions that people believed to have never been produced, printed, or distributed.

............. I don't foresee any thing in 2019, But Never say Never :p

Most collectors spend up to about $25,000 per year. There are a few SOBs (using the term like George Costanza used it on the Seinfeld episode) that spend a few hundred thousands per year.

Im bigger when it comes to vintage in terms of % of budget vs. modern cards but modern wise I'll be looking at Aaron Nola, Blake Snell and Walker Buehler RC autos this coming year. Throw in Luis Severino as well.

In think I have a couple of Nola cards I pulled from Bowman Chrome and maybe a Snell Auto. I mainly do vintage but we crack open modern stuff for fun. PM me for specifics.

I am going to do more unopened this year focusing on 70’s PSA packs, racks from 1973-76, and some key rookies like Schmidt, Brett, 75 Topps stars, Ryan... Plus add a few 50’s Mantle cards in. High grade and a nice Jordan rookie in high grade.

I started collecting cards again in 2012, and 2019 will be the first year I won't be buying any cards. It was a fun ride, and I was finally able to collect all those vintage cards I had always dreamed about as a kid.

I have been in the process of selling off my collection, and it has been freeing in a way. It's funny it took me weeks to start a FS thread after I decided I needed to sell, I was actually scared to sell off my cards lol. I don't think at this point I'm going to be back to collecting again. I seem to be losing interest in material things in my life as of late and I'm not sure if that will change or not, but I guess I'll figure that part out later down the road.

I still have a long way to go selling though, I have my Russell Wilson collection to move, my Largent master set, I need to figure out what's going to happen with that, and just a ton of other cards modern and vintage that need to go so I will still be around for a while :D .

I also appreciate all the knowledge shared from members on the sports card message boards over the years. I hope everybody has a great 2019!

I optimistically went with less than $2,500, but that includes the offset of what I sell and eBay bucks I put towards my Patrick Roy collection. Also would like to put some more focus on Ripken Jr. and Griffey Jr. cards, but mostly 90's base cards in PSA 10 and lower dollar inserts I grew up looking for.

Main collecting focus is Patrick Roy playing days 85/86-02/03, expect 1/1, National/All-Star stamped cards.PC Completion: 2,548/2,952; 86.31% My Patrick Roy PC Website:https://proy33collector.weebly.com
