Looking to downsize, opinions on best ways to move parts of collection

My wife and I are in our mid 40's and our twins leave to go to college in 2 years so we have been talking about downsizing our home and all the other things you accumulate over the years. For me that means moving about 50 monster boxes of cards that I do not want any longer. I have broken my collecting focus down to complete sets and PSA graded cards and these no longer fit. Do you guys believe there would be enough interest if the monster boxes were broken down into team lots? The years range from 1980-2010. I don't know what kind of star power is left in the boxes as it has been many years since the lids have even been removed from them. Any opinions would be appreciated. Whatever I choose to do, I will be listing in the BST forum once I have determined what all is available. I know I will have some miscellaneous unopened and tons of sets available. Again, all opinions welcomed, thanks.

For the bulk singles that don't have a lot of value on their own, my instinct would be to separate out individual player lots for each of the HOF'ers, and then team-lot the rest of it, but only if it's worth your time to break down that way.

Is it mostly baseball or football? For football, team lots is the way to go to move bulk.

I may be interested if you have any 1993 Topps to 2010 Topps. I'm working on a complete set run of Topps from 1979 to current and I have completed 1979 to 1992. I would be interested in cards in bulk, but I guess shipping is the only downside. Shipping monster boxes costs more than the cards are worth for the junk era stuff.

miwlvrn -- I am not sure there are enough HOF'ers to actually separate them

ndleo -- probably 5 boxes of fb, couple boxes of bsk & hcy, the rest are baseball

krisd -- most is prior to those years as I was more active and moved most stuff at the end of each year

I was thinking each team lot would be enough to fill a medium to large flat rate box

Depending on how you have them stored in the boxes, I'd say either team lots or set lots. Three 600ct boxes fit nicely in medium flat rate boxes...not sure about large flat rate boxes.

Not sure if it is worth your time to separate the cards into team lots and etc. Shipping charges will most likely deter any online transactions. Craiglists is an option and I would offer the entire LOT. Good luck.

Fire ,, Scarecrow.. Fire. Within this message board audience there is literally tonnage which should simply be burned.

Spend time selling boxes of commons and worrying about shipping ? I got a couple solutions for that shat :)

I totally get this angle and part of me agrees BUT there are some amazing sets from the aforementioned time period and before anybody dumps it in a bonfire I’m hoping they take the time to rescue any true Gem candidates as even these way over produced sets will be awesome to own in top grade. I’m talking raw Gem sets.

    Interesting topic.

Just curious what some might consider big enough to downsize?

I live with Mary in 2500 sq ft. Wouldn't want anything smaller to be honest.

Broski I’m in 2,200 with three kids still in the house BUT it’s also our retirement house in FL so it will get bigger eventually lol
What saves me is a large garage which I man cave in all year round.

I have noticed that for bulk football lots, quite often the cards will sell for more if separated out by college/university rather than pro team and put up for sale during August/September. Sports aside, there are a lot more fans of a university than there are of a football team (for example, there are millions more people who own clothing/merch/etc. of their favorite school than there are of those who own similar of their favorite NFL team); however, I know it takes much more time to separate out this way, so it would really depend on if the time was worth it to you.

It is 7300 sq ft with just over 5100 of that finished. It really isn't the size of the home, it's the size of the mortgage payment we want to downsize. Thanks all for your suggestions, I believe I am going to start sorting into team lots. Hopefully I can con the wife and kids into a family sorting party in the near future to make this go faster.

If you decide to sort the FB by college teams, I would be
interested in all of the Univ. of Tenn. players.

    That's big Stoney.

One thing that was important to me when reaching the "downsize" years?

Keeping fixed costs of operation/expenses down. I have less than 4 yrs left on the mortgage.

When that's gone? No expenses. Plus, in TX, when you reach 65 - the value of the home is frozen - property values have risen in the past 5 yrs and right now I'm saving 42% on my property tax.

I wish you and others all the best moving forward into the years where we're supposed to fully enjoy ourselves with kids out the door, a career/job in the rear view mirror and plenty of time to pursue a hobby.

50 monster boxes? Drop them off at goodwill, pluck all your nose hairs out one by one and call it a day.
