Why? Is it their stern lecture on getting cards graded?

  • addicted2ebayaddicted2ebay Posts: 2,094 ✭✭✭✭

He won a auction from me recently and listed it with a 150% markup. Funny thing is it’s still cheaper than 707’s listing lol

It seems they have a fair amount of graded for sale. At a real quick glance it also looks like they are selling raw for higher prices than you can buy PSA slabs in same grade.

He gives the name Dean a bad rap! Glad I have never been confused with him in all my years of participating in the card hobby. He just clogs up the listings with all of his overpriced nonsense. I have never purchased an item from him and have no intentions of doing so.

They can get their cards graded but you shouldn’t because it hurts their spread.

I don't get the premise of that blog. I totally get the desire by many to stay raw as I do with most things. They are trying too hard to push perhaps new or part time collectors to one way of collecting. The savvy experienced collector is going to make his or her own choices for what is best for them.

They, and every other dealer, make more money from raw collections than if that same collection was graded. That link is posted in the “sell your card to us” section. If a card is graded a 9, that doesn’t give them the opportunity to convince you it’s Ex-mt and that they can only give 5% of what the card is worth.

Just read their blog and came away with several things and none of them positive. Knew they priced things very high, and completely disagree with many points in their blog. Main thing is I have never been a customer of theirs in the past and that will not change going forward for several reasons.

Hate to pile on but the video they have up with the owner describing the company buy process is quite LOL. He is not talking to “us”. He’s talking to those with limited to zero hobby experience.

Dean’s book on the Topps and Bowman bubble gum war is an informative read. He and Levi have managed to stay in the card business for a long time despite all the advice they have received on chat boards about what ridiculous prices they ask. Maybe they just like to anoy people

Dean has several cards that I would buy at VCP prices, maybe even a 10% premium. But the prices he has things listed at on eBay has me staying on the sidelines.

Good thing nothing on the internet gathers dust. In a physical shop the cards listed by Dean wouldn’t end up in a knowledgeable collectors hands until unearthed by an archeologist

People get all worked up over Deans and 707 etc, It really doesnt bother me at all. They can charge whatever they want for their cards, I just wont buy them. A lot of the "old time" dealers have overgraded, over priced merchandise. check out Larry Fritch and Kit Youngs prices. they are nearly as bad, but I dont see people getting all upset over them. Probably because they dont have a big presence on Ebay.

"So does it really matter that they get a little more for their card that is professionally graded "EXCELLENT" - when compared to other cards that are graded EXCELLENT"? Especially if they could of sold it ungraded as "NEAR MINT" for 75% more?"

Soooo, basically ...... yeah, I have no words for this.

I'm not defending his little essay, but there are some grains of truth here and there. Obviously all high profile star cards will receive a PSA premium in most any grade because of the fear of shenanigans. But with lower profile cards, cracking out, say, a PSA 6 that looks nice will often result in a higher sale price because the buyer is envisioning it in a PSA 8 holder.

My only issue is having to wade through Dean's ebay listings. I could save 20-30% of my time if I could block that nonsense - its not an option on ebay. A third party should design a website where you can do just that with ebay's listings.

I wonder if this guy ever gets confused for ebay Dean?

Kiss me once, shame on you.

I am in total agreement with your statement but I guess how I'm reading it is he is suggesting to a person potentially selling their cards, that they are going to get 75% more for a card that PSA would grade a 6 when they could sell it as NM instead. While this might be true of a dealer, selling to the public, it's not going to play out that way when average Joe Collector tries to sell his cards to him.
I also find it ironic how they basically bash PSA all over the place but yet they say they grade their cards using the PSA grading standards.

I have all my searches excluding dean's and 707 se above
You can add Soorts_cards_unlimited to this list. He is 2,3 or even 4X VCP

I know you all will not believe it but often when searching sellers ended auctions on VCP I see deans or 707
    so they do sell cards.

I would bet 99% of the time it is the newbie or the impulsive/uneducated buyer that purchases his items.

If there was only a way to exclude Dean's listings on COMC too. If anyone knows a way, please let me know!

@Nathaniel1960 you can exclude sellers in the advanced search on the EBAY website. It's kind of deceptive since it says include sellers, but you can change it to exclude. I don't know if you can do this on the app from your phone.

IT WORKS.Hurray!!!!! Use computer only to block it as Nathaniel1960 says.

Funny story about Deans cards. He had a card I wanted on EBay for $850 BIN with no auction or best offer option. I sent him an Email asking if he would take $750 for the card and was oh so politely told they don’t negotiate prices but thanked me and asked if there was anything else they could do for me, and I’m like “Umm No” So the card in question auction ends without selling and they relist it for $910 😳. I totally get it that it’s a free market blah blah blah but Cmon.

How can Dean's Cards sell ANYTHING? Prices are absurd.

They sell most of their cards direct from the store discounting their eBay prices heavily.

For their regular buyers Ebay is merely an advertising platform paid for advertising their cards. A lot like 4_Sharp_Corners.

    HAPPY COLLECTING!!!
  • craig44craig44 Posts: 11,264 ✭✭✭✭✭

that is true. If you go to his store there is a sliding scale of sorts were your discount depends on how much you spend. in my opinion, the prices are still in the stratosphere even with the discount, but, to each his own.
