All this discussion about bits, but nothing about a picayune.

Two Bits or not Two Bits?

    That is the question!

I throw out several numismatic references while I am accepting and handing back change at the car parts store. I usually get dumb looks for calling out "Saw-Buck","Double Saw-Buck", "Fish-Scale", "Two, Four and Six Bits". The one that seems to get the biggest chuckle is when a customer hands me a "C-Note" and I ask them why do they call it a "C-Note"? I usually get "I don't know" from the customer...I would hold the note up looking for the tell-tale signs of authenticity; water mark especially, and reply "Now you see it...now you don't" as I drop it into the strong box below the counter. Then tell them that the "C" is represented by the Roman numeral 100. The two bits thing gets some inquiries...not much though.

Reminds me of the early-1900's ditty, "Shave-and-a-Haircut..."

And no Toon can resist the rhythmic knock.

I know what a "bit" is.

Can anyone tell me what a "tid" is?

    As in "tid bit"?

Three times a day in latin. Sometimes see it on Rx. Probably not the current meaning for “tid bit.”
