SLQ 1916 indicators

Namvet69Namvet69 Posts: 9,015 ✭✭✭✭✭

Just examined an old roll of no date SLQs. Found 2 with the lower rounded cloth and the hair flipped up. All the rest the cloth is flatter, more space between cloth and base and hair does not have that curly flip. No dates but I enjoy the hunt. Could these 2 be 1916's? And no stars on rev. Peace Roy

Rivets on the shield are too strong for a 1916.

All other SLQ display the attached cloth which is a different shape.

I can't download the referenced images but The shape of the draped cloth matches the below description. If course they could also be 1917 type 1.

The image on the left is the hair curl of an authentic 1916 Standing Quarter, and you can see that the second curl curves almost parallel with the large curl. The 1917 Type 1 (right image) does not curve the same and appears much straighter.
The image on the left is the drapery of an authentic 1916 Standing Quarter, and you can see that the drapery is above the block. The 1917 Type 1 (right image) the drapery is below the edge of the block.
The image on the left is the bottom of the left robe of an authentic 1916 Standing Quarter, and you can see the bottom is flatter and has a smaller opening compared to the 1917 Type 1 (right image) robe bottom. Also the bottom of the robe on a authentic 1916 has a wider space in between it and the date block compared to the 1917.

The most reliable way to tell the difference on very worn coins are the drape folds under the outstretched arm. Go online and take a look.

This is one of the best illustrations on the Internet. I don't know who to credit. 99% of the time the diagnostic under the arm is all that is needed.

  • Not 16's. Rivets are to strong as mentioned previously. I find that is the easiest and most clear way to distinguish.

Ps awesome 16 vs 17 comparison photos. Lots of other diagnostics to find what works best for you. I'm sticking with the shield
