Set building dilemma.

After completing many shorter basketball sets in PSA (1969,1970,1971,1986,1987,1988), I decided to go after a big Topps baseball set. I’ve been working on the 1967 set and I am at 20% with close to 50% of the high numbers. I am collecting a minimum of PSA 7. I noticed the other day that I started this set in early 2016. Almost 3 years in and only 20%. Anyone else working on sets for such a long time? I try to get HOF players and high numbers first. I’m contemplating finishing the high numbers and HOF players in PSA and buying the other commons in nrmt if I can find them. Not sure if I want to spend so much money on PSA commons for the next 7 years. Anyone else experience this?

It certainly requires patience, especially if you are holding out for nice examples.
I don’t know how you guys do those sets like that. I just can’t go through that. I like buying complete sets and upgrading the stars over time but the set is complete though so not having patience is not a problem. Lol hats off to you guys that build sets over so many years
Two years is nothing. I’ve been working on my 63 set- minimum PSA 8-for more than 10 years. Fwiw, the 67 set is pretty easy. It takes patience, but there are no $500 commons that year. Don’t compromise on quality, and enjoy the chase.
I started my 72 Topps set 10 yrs ago. when I started I was looking for PSA 8. Completed the PSA 8 set (almost) in about 5 years, then decided to try to make it a minimum PSA 9 and am still working on it 5 years later. As your want list shrinks, the cards are way more expensive and tougher to find. Have to enjoy the journey.....just have patience.
I spent 20 years on my 1968 set and just finished it last year. Started out as a PSA 8 set and about half way through, I got sick of paying up for stabbed commons that weren't even as nice as my raw ones. Decided to keep the stars graded and do the rest of the set in centered raw mint condition. I love flipping through my album enjoying my set just like I did my others sets as a kid. I sometimes get tempted to crack out my stars, but economics prevail and I refrain.
