Just picked up a coin I realize I know very little about!

I just purchased a PCGS MS66 1923 Peace dollar for a type set. It is a 'sight seen' purchase with full return priviledges (even the Paypal and shipping both ways cost). According to the Dealer this one is a "MS66.8" all day long.
He also reminded me the sheet on these have come down lately.

What I realized, after buying this one was I don't know squat about high grade Peace dollars! Is PCGS honorable with their grading of this series? (It's in a blue insert holder)
Are MS66 Peace dollars scarce? I like the sound of this one and am hoping I also like the look. I've seen some nice MS65's and for the premium paid, hope this MS66 is noticable. There is no way I could swing it for an MS67 so this is my best chance at a nice Peace type coin.
Peace dollar collectors- what are your thoughts regarding these coins in MS66?

That's the problem with Type collecting, it's real hard to know enough about each series to be sure that you are really getting what you pay for. I grabbed a 65 a long time ago from a board member who had a high ranked Peace dollar set, otherwise, I would probably be lost as well.

I'll admit that I know just about nothing about PCGS Peace Dollars.image

Fairlaneman- It is NOT buying the plastic in this case. Possibly I wasn't clear enough in my original post. The coin was described, in detail, over the phone to me. I bought it based on the coin's description along with a full return priviledge. I've seen enough MS65 Peace dollars to feel comfortable with what separates them from MS64's. I have not dealt with enough MS66's, though I imagine when I see the coin I'll know it is "better than an MS65". I was hoping to gain some valuable input regarding these GEM Peace dollars from this forum.
I'm sorry you misconstrued my post to come to the conclusion I was "buying the plastic". I'll attempt to even be more plain and careful with my wording in the future to avoid those errors.

      1. Don,

You're right, I bought all of my silver dollars from PQPeace (Morgan, HR Peace, LR Peace). I haven't seen him post in a while though.

Braddick, I am no expert, all I know is that nice high grade Peace $s can be far and few between, and you can find high grade examples that aren't very pleasing at all. That being said, MS66's can at times be spectacular! When you get the coin, look it over, and if it appears to be graded properly, I would say keep it, unless it is absolutely not the look of a coin for you.

I agree the PQPeace would be the guy to check with on this one. He has posted here lately, selling some Morgan $s on the B/S/T board. Another thing you may want to do is to scan it so that we can all see it for ourselfs.

Anyways, congratulations on your great purchase!

JJacks- You're right. I'm hoping this one falls within that "attractive" criteria.
Fairlaneman- Your smiley is duly noted, and I appreciate you not jumping on me for jumping on you!~ image
