1972: Which one to submit?

I’m building a 1972 sub and it comes down to this: I have one slot remaining and two cards I’m considering.

I’m confident both would be 9s except for the vertical centering. I’ve measured the Cedeno three times and I keep getting 60/40, but my gut tells me it will not get a 9.

The Brett on the other hand is a very tough card. I’m sure it will not get a 9, but it would be a nice 8 which I’d be happy to have in my set.

Bottom line, I would prefer a Cedeno 9. I will be annoyed if the Cedeno gets an 8 and OK when the Brett gets an 8, so I’m leaning toward sending the Brett.

IMO, Brett is an 8 due to T/B and L/R centering. The cendeno has 9 centering, although T/B is close, but I didn't check the corners.

    Collecting PSA 9's from 1970-1977. Raw 9's from 72-77. Raw 10's from '78-'83.
Collecting Unopened from '72-'83; mostly BBCE certified boxes/cases/racks.
    Prefer to buy in bulk.

I also think the Brett is likely an 8 due to T/B centering, also. PSA prefers 72s centered higher than that and I think you have a better shot at a 9 with the Cedeno for which T/B centering is well within PSA 9 standards.

I lean towards the lower pop, but I know not everyone feels that way.

Your nice, large scans may be magnifying it, but how does that top left corner look on the Cedeno?

Cedeno looks to be the best one but has a touch on the top left.

This has been happening ever since I got an IPhone 7. I’ll photograph a card, and then when I look at the photo I see flaws I didn’t notice. I just went back and looked at the corner in question, and it looks pretty much flawless to the naked eye. With such high resolution every corner starts to show wear under magnification.

I’ll probably end up sending in the Cedeno. I know it has a much better shot at a 9 (the Brett has no shot at that), I just hate to waste a submission on a marginal candidate. With the Brett at least an 8 still has some appeal.

I like them both. But I'd probably go with the Brett.

    Why not both?

These are for my free grades from the Set Registry. I had 15 really nice ones I used for my platinum renewal sub and I’m trying to pick the best three out of what I’ve got left for the three free grades. And I’ve got two that are better than both of these.

I dont collect 72s so sorry for a stupid question ... the "B" in Brett looks cut off at the bottom. Is that typical and has no effect on the grade?

All Bretts are like that and it does not seem to affect the grade.

I think there is just enough wear on a couple of Cedeno's corners to keep it an 8, just like the Brett.

If you're only sending in 1, send the Brett as it will get the 8 you are content with. I don't think the Cedeno will do any better.

I sent the Cedeno along with two others so we’ll see...probably in about 6 months since the free set registry submissions have no turn around time :)

Well my three free set registry cards popped after around 65 days. Pleasantly surprised since there is no advertised turnaround time. Looks like those advising the Cedeno were right. I’m frankly shocked at these results as these were basically the leftovers from my other very successful sub. That purchase was the gift that keeps on giving!

Congrats on those 3. Glad the Cedeno hit a 9. A PSA 10 on the Gullett. Wow!!!
