Shipping or Airplane - Basketball

So I am traveling to Chicago to visit family, while I am there I am hitting an autograph show. Gonna get a basketball signed. What is the best way to get it back to California? Should I pack it in my checked luggage, carry it on, or ship it? I assume that deflating it and shipping it isn't the best option.

If they let you I'd carry it on. Better confirm in advance.

if it will be valuable to you, ship it back home. Or if you don't have anything else to carry on, just use a backpack to carry it onto the airplane

P.S. I . deflated the basketball a little making sure it didn't fold on the autograph. The basketball made it safe as a carry on.
