Is there a reliable source that has a diverse and accurate description or photos of various identifying characteristics? I find some some here and there, and have identified some on my own, but I want MORE! The recent thread on the 37 D 3 leg was wonderful and after a taste I want, nay, need more info on more coins...
Sources like CoinFacts and variety vista have some good info, but I find more questions than answers looking for reliable ways to identify varieties from most of the garbage photos on eBay.

One single source which covers a lot of varieties in both old and new series is the Cherrypickers' Guide.
This is a 2 volume book.
It does not have as many varieties as the variety vista website has for the modern series.
For particular series, some have their own websites, like
VAMWorld for Morgan and Peace dollars
http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compute.amazonaws.com/wiki/Home
and a couple of competing sites for Indian Cents

Here's one for capped bust half dimes:

This is the best answer !!!! Be prepared to expand the library.
PCGS has the 2 grading and counterfeit detection books that mention some die markers on certain rarities. You can imagine when the numbers of dies used as well as die states of each die are combined, the combinations explode exponentially.
Just like the threads on what is wrong with 'counterfeit slabs', there are some people who feel more information on the internet helps the forgers/counterfeiters as well as the collectors.
I agree that CPG and VarietyVista are great, but sometimes lacking or wrong. The specialized books on each series can have more information, but not always.
