Old Lebanese coins

Hello, new to this forum and thanks for allowing me to join.

Long story short, my mother passed in 2016 and part of the inheritance she left 1 of 4 coins to me, I asked for one so that I can make a keep sake close to my heart to remember her by. The problem is that I have no idea of the value of these coins, I mean if it is worth $1000 US no problem I would do it, but if it is worth 8 to 10k then no I would not do this.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated and hopefully I get good news that it is only worth 1K or less...

Thanks again, I look forward in reading your responses. Steve

I believe that I see three (or just two?) Turkish coins and one coin from Austria.

Perhaps you should just show the single coin that you wish to have evaluated.

Your photos are okay for identification, but may be too overlit for grading purposes.

  • First I would like to thank you for your response. You are correct, 3 small coins and 1 bigger one, it is the smaller coin that I am inquiring about. The first and third photos are the front and back of the coin(s) in question. Unfortunately I would have to go to the bank to take more pictures...

So they are not Lebanese... Thank you

  • PS: not looking for and exact price just low to high, remember this is not for sale... Thank you

So using my coinoscope app on my cell phone, it indicates Turkey 100 kurush 1914. This app is free. Welcome aboard. Peace Roy

Three Turkish coins and one Austrian coin. The Turkish coins run approximately 1/10th ounce gold, two tenths ounce gold, and if a bit bigger, one-half ounce gold. Dates do not seem to mean too much as nobody collects them that way. The 100 Kurush denomination is the two tenths ounce gold coin.

I don't think that you are getting anywhere close to $1,000 U.S., but would always be willing to hear what an genuine expert might say.

The coins are jewelry, typical banged up surface pattern from a charm bracelet. Keep as is as they have little numismatic value now.

The small Arabic numerals "10" below the toughra indicate that these were struck in the 10th year of reign of the sultan who acceded in 1327. This converts to AD 1918, the final year of issue for these ocins as the Empire collapsed at about that time. Unfortunately, the year has been restruck many times in succeeding years, making these coins extremely common.

Unfortunately, as the others above have stated, these coins are common enough that being turned into jewellery effectively destroys any interest a coin collector might have had in them. As such, they are only worth bullion value, or rather, their value is determined by the jewellery market, rather than the coin market.

Although they are usually listed under "Turkey" in the coin catalogues, because they were minted in Istanbul, technically they are "Ottoman empire" coins, rather than "Turkish" - the country of Turkey did not exist back then. As Lebanon did not exist as a separate country back then either - Lebanon was part of the Ottoman Empire at the time - it is fair to call these coins "Lebanese", as they would have seen circulation in Lebanon.

Waste no more time arguing what a good man should be. Be one.

Sure, look under "Ottowallonia" in all the coin catalogs, it's easier to find that way.

  • Thank you very much for this info, best regards to all, Steve
