What is the state of the classic German coin market these days ?

Any German collectors please care to chime in?

On a whole, most areas have been rather stagnant, but really high quality earlier material is usually fairly strong. Certain medals also continue to be rather strong. Empire minors have really been dead though, outside of a couple very scarce dates.

Overall the pre 1800s submarket seems flat but I have no hard facts to support this claim. I suspect part of the problem is a lack of material coming to market. I'm not sure if that is a cause or effect.

Just spoke with my Friend in Germany. He is one of these collectors with extreme deep pockets, has excellent taste and an outstanding German gold collection. he indicated that most good material is getting bid up beyond expectations at all auctions in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. he bid on a coin last week with a high bid anticipation of Euro 5-6000. It got the hammer at 31000 plus juice. its unpredictable he suggested.
He also suggested that there may be "some help" in bidding by auction houses once an item gets to a certain level and seems to be strong.

Any info on the 1950s commem 5 marks ?

  • jdmernjdmern Posts: 318 ✭✭✭

Krause is a bit high on all of the 1950’s 5 marks, but a couple (1952 Nurnberg especially) have pretty decent value

I guess they all are trying to maximize profit (juice) or if they own the coin what is the case often, are surely creed driven. I have heard stories and serious rumors before. so no high pre-bids for this guy.You are almost sure you will win.

My experience is very early German States that is quality for the grade is doing good. Late 19th and 20th century has been more problematic

Most stuff in Germany is either flat or down over the past 5 years. The prices from my 2011 Jaeger catalog are still above market value in most cases. Some of the stuff from the Empire seems a little harder to find than they were 5 years ago and has held or increased in price. Stuff like 1-10 pfennigs are weaker overall. Silver coins are holding okay. I am seeing mint sets and a lot of the more modern stuff go for cheaper on eBay.

The early 5 mark BRD commemoratives are often trading well below Krause prices...but they've been doing that for years.

An PCGS Ms 65 1888 A Prussia (Friedrich ) 5 mark recently sold for $324 on Heritage.

    I thought that was cheap

Much more available and rapidly graded broadening population report when compared to a few years ago. 1888 Prussia 5 Mark in GEM was considered scarce years ago due to limited grading, I would assume pop report shows many 65s and higher today,
