NGC World Coin Population Question

I have a Germany 1920 D 50P graded MS68, its truely a stunning coin. However, when I look up the cert # it shows 54 in this grade and none high, but only 8 other pieces graded. Is this some kind of error, or is it possible 50+ of these were graded 68. The holder I have is an old "no line fatty".

Any input would be appreciated.

Is it this type of coin?

If so, I only see that it says there are 54 in MS 68 with none higher.

This page has the same info....it appears that the other 8 you are mentioning are all lower grades (2 in MS 64; 4 in MS 65; and 2 in MS 67)

My cert # is 311794-018, I found 2 others that have sold on Heritage. One has a cert # very close to mine.

Then it’s what I mentioned in my reply. There are 54 MS 68 graded coins and 8 coins in lower grades (see breakdown in my post above).

Were these all part of some hoard that was graded all together possibly?

This type is very easy to find in bu and gem condition. They made a lot of them and they weren't used for very long. They were superceded in 1924 with the rentenpfennig and were made essentially useless before that due to inflation. I suspect it's because a lot of them never made it to circulation. Someone probably had an original roll, not exactly a horde. I don't recall if I've seen any rolls for sale of this exact type. I have seen rolls from years going back to the Empire, so it stands to reason.

I would assume that the population report on these is correct, there are many exceptional examples of these still raw as well
