Does this PSA Lighthouse case appear to have been tampered with ?

russkcparusskcpa Posts: 29 ✭✭

This card was re-slabbed in 2017 and was then sold in a PWCC Ebay auction in March 2018. I acquired the card not long ago. I see no evidence of tampering but am not an expert.
Short of sending it to PSA do I have other options ?
Thanks
Russ

    Slab looks fine to ,me.

ETA: Looks like the same card from here: https://www.psacard.com/auctionprices/basketball-cards/1957-topps/bill-russell/auction/1329564/ What are your concerns?

    @DJR
    So what your saying is:
    1. Someone takes the old slab (pre 2000) and replaces the 1957 Russell card with a counterfeit card
    2. They then send the old slab with the counterfeit card to PSA to be re encapsulated
    3. PSA re encapsulates the card without being concerned about its authenticity
    That is impossible
Those super zoomed pictures you posted are of the new slab. Where are the pictures of the "old slab" that shows it was compromised ?

The slab looks fine to me. Aren't the newer PSA slabs harder to tamper with as well?

PSA examines all cards sent in for a reholder. There's approximately zero chance someone cracked an old case, put a counterfeit Russell rookie in, and then got it all reholdered in a lighthouse. Zero point zero.

Looks more like PSA 5 quality card.

Card and issue are an absolute beast! The centering on this one is actually ridiculously good. The chip(s)? That’s why it’s a 7. Solid pick up absolutely real and congrats!!!!

I should add the focus and lack of blizzard in the background add much to the appeal and grade.

I agree with Dan. I’ve looked at enough 57s to say I’d be glad to give 7 money for that card. They are actually very lenient on 57 basketball. I had a 6 that was slabbed 2 years ago that was nowhere near that nice. I am consistently surprised by the grades I get for those.

Yeah, the centering and lack of snow make this a borderline unicorn. Nice pickup.

Slab is fine. I saw some knucklehead on Net54 suggest that it might have been tampered with. It hasn't.

"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

I will also add that the prior two owners of this card are two of the most knowledgeable collectors and sellers I have met. My post WAS NOT intended to imply that the card was tampered with or fake in any way.

Russ, That is a beautiful card. Congratulations on the pickup. There is nothing wrong with the slab or the card.
