Damage/corrosion.
Nickels have more copper in them than nickel; they corrode quite readily if exposed to the environment.
Thems are sum beat up coins!
I am glad you rescued those coins. You can now turn them around and put them back into circulation so they are no longer stuck in the dirt or in the parking lot.
