1818 B-10 Bust Quarter G-T-G : 200 Year Anniversary

1TwoBits1TwoBits Posts: 464 ✭✭✭✭

For this month's continued tribute to the 200 year anniversary of 1818 coinage, this Bust Quarter Guess-The-Grade features the 1818 Browning 10 variety. It is considered to be an R-3, and is available in a number of different die states. The obverse die, which is used for the 1818 B-8, B-9, and B-10 has a die line coming off the inner point of star 2 and a triple dentil under the first 1 in the date. The reverse die is only used for the 1818 B-10.

The example below is an early die state with the reverse not yet showing the die crack that develops from the rim below the 2 up through the left side of the shield.

The following example is the latest die state. Along with the die crack from the 2 up through the shield, it also has a die crack from the rim, through the U in United, then through the left wing, across the shield horizontally, through the right wing, to R in America, to the rim. The toning makes a lot of this horizontal die crack difficult to see in the pictures, but you should be able to notice the horizontal crack through the shield if you look closely.

Feel free to guess the PCGS grades for fun if you'd like, as well as if you thought they passed at CAC. Comments are always welcome, and if you have an 1818 B-10 please post a picture of it.

Great coins, you set has extraordinary eye appeal.

this marriage used to be listed in Browning as a higher rarity than it actually turned out to be, which i realized about the time i "cherried" my 3rd example, and saw a similar comment in this forum about the higher B10 survival. At any rate, neat varieties, forum changes (loss of index for stored image files) make it difficult but will try to find pics.

edit, ok, here is one of them:

The first coin is a PCGS AU58, and the second VF35. The guesses were very close. Both coins stickered at CAC.

Thanks to everyone that commented, and @Baley and @spacehayduke for posting pictures of their B-10's.
