Tough one. PSA is so inconsistent with what they do with back centering. I am going to guess a PSA 5.

Other than the centering, the colors are bright, edges are clean and corners are sharp. You must not like this particular set or player? Lol.

I've seen some pretty ugly higher graded cards...but this is far from "ugly" imo.

    True.

However, so is BVG from my experience. I had a super clean and an off-centered (reverse) similar to this one, Walter Payton RC. Received a 6. Wish I still had it for comparison purposes.

This Dr. J. blows the Payton away in every other aspect; corners, edges, etc...

I feel grading is so subjective and can be very controversial as you will soon find out lol.

You weren't right at all. Lol.

I'd be "happier" if it was at least an 8 (oc).

    It's not...

I had PSA 3 Dr. J. rookie that I cracked and resubbed and it came back a PSA 6. Might be a small hard to see micro-wrinkle on the card. I would crack that one out and try again. The front of that card is about as clean a looking card as you can find. Good luck if you resubmit.

Was gonna say a 5 before seeing the close-up pics so that seems about right.

The surface wrinkle is one of the things I have never totally understood about card grading and how it can lower the grade so much. You can have a Gem Mint 10 turn into a 5 and yet there are loads of PSA 6's with pretty bad corners and other issues. The 4 is a result of a PSA 7 appearance card with a wrinkle of some kind.

There are no creases or wrinkles.

I just think they killed it bc of the centering front and back.

    Did you request no qualifiers?

Also, I can find several higher examples to compare mine to, but here is one prime example of a $550+ sale on this PSA 8 lol

If there are no surface issues crack it and try again.

I have had a few that it took almost twenty minutes under a bright lamp to find the wrinkle. That said it was there.

That's the type of card you get auto'd and triple your money once reslabbed. Great color / Corners. Centering is fugly.

Why would you crack that out of an 8 slab? Did you think a little work on the corners would get you an 8.5?

    That's an 8 from eBay.

    Mine is the 4.

I was comparing the two of them.

I found a surface issue that most likely keeps this where it's at unless it goes to SGC or BVG.

Small idents. That's fine with me. No creases or wrinkles and I still think this should be at least a 6.

That will do it. Nice card none the less but I do not see it going over a 5. One of the dints is pretty deep.
WOuld look great in a Nm raw set though.

If your goal was to land a higher graded copy and self submitted this example I would crack it and sell it raw and make note to the issue and I bet it sells for more as a copy to get signed or for a nice raw set.

PSA makes mistakes but when the grade is brutal there is a reason.

You didn't answer my question about qualifiers but the back looks like a chin hair away from being miscut. Here's a card that got the (MC) qualifier that has just barely less, if any, real estate than the Erving. So if they didn't consider it miscut, they obviously docked it severely for the back centering.

For whatever reason this card almost never gets high marks. I have had what looks to be 8's come back 5's, then re submit and they come back 7's. If I don't get a PSA 8 soon I will quit attempting to collect a nice graded example. Similar to how I quit collecting Jerry Rice rookies and anything else from 86 Topps Football.

What question? You were referring to card I posted from eBay.

Im not sure what you were asking.

I posted some close pics of the surface issue, hence the reason it received a 4.

I didn't send it in. I acquired it like is. I figured it was undergraded.

I'm happy with it either way.

I was going to guess a nice 5 so I would resubmit it, but not expect to get something higher than a 5.
