Sails and ships on coinage

Aspie_RoccoAspie_Rocco Posts: 3,259 ✭✭✭✭✭

I really enjoy seeing coins that depict ships, particularly sail boats and ocean going vessels. Having “sailed” around the world in an aircraft carrier, I really appreciate what sailors of yesteryear did and saw.

Brief digress. I once had the opportunity to work the rigging on a tall ship outside Ventura Harbor while sailing about on a field trip. I was leaning precariously over the edge gripping a line as the sea spray and wind covered me in the shiny patina of the ocean. Meanwhile my classmates where getting sea sick and huddled in the center of the ship, lol.

I realize this topic of ships has been covered elsewhere previously but after a lazy search here I didn’t immediately find such a thread.

I pulled these photos from CoinFacts. I hope this is ok. The photographers at PCGS have my sincere respect and appreciation for their craftsmanship. Great work!!!

I’m curious what pictures or stories you folks might have to share of ships and watercraft.

One of my favorite grey side pieces. No story goes with it other than I bought it many years ago.

I think some of the better looking ships are found up north.

Here's some ...partial... sails on a coin.
    It's a coin I will always treasure.
The vestiges of the rigging on the Talbot, Allum, and Lee tokens that were overstruck by an early half cent is valued (by me) very highly.

    Low grade but interesting.

    :)

That is awesome! Did the mint over strike a lot of tokens? I was not aware of this practice. Very interesting. Thank you.

My favorite among the US Coins with ships is the 1920 Pilgrim commemorative half. It looks so high relief with so much action on the reverse when the luster catches light. Here is my own example

Don’t have any coins to show, but I did have the opportunity to spend the night on the Bounty when she was in San Diego. I could have climbed the rigging if I’d wanted too. I thought about it, but chickened out. I’m terrified of heights, but I do regret it now that she’s gone.

Bought both of these raw last year. An auction I wish I could go back, and buy more as all items went beyond cheap. Wasn't savvy on prices concerning world coins. Oh well, live and learn. Purchased both of these for less than $60 total...both BU.

1797 Penny, and 1799 1/2 Penny. Ship, and sail is lower left viewing Britannia.

The Pilgrim was designed by my first cousin, 4 times removed, so it has a special place in my heart. Sadly, the ship's sails and rigging are apparently inaccurate to the period. Also, there was plenty of controversy surrounding the coin as the mint folks weren't entirely thrilled with his work. So, Cyrus Dallin remains my favorite coin-designing relative, who once did a gorgeous rendition of a ship that wasn't entirely appreciated at the time....... just not a factually accurate one. :)

Nobody complains about the rendition of Governor Bradford, even though his rendition is completely inaccurate. No photos or paintings exist. ;)

I think the Pilgrim Half is a gorgeous coin. I love the high relief!

Here's a fun 2oz round I "just had to have."
