Cracked open a wax box of 1988 Topps this weekend and found this:
Was on junk wax gems and saw it's pretty rare. The poster had gone through thousands and thousands of 88 Topps and hadn't seen it. I didn't realize it was that rare.
Also, the Leiter error card was in the box as well.
I pulled it from a case I bought years ago, so no doubt more are in there.

There are many errors/variations in 1988 Topps. Should be a fun hunt if you are into errors/variations. I looked through my stash of '88 Topps a few years back and did not find the magenta variation out of about 50 examples.
Yeah, '88 and '89 Topps are chock-a-bock full of errors and variations. Nice find.

What's the story on the Mattingly New York A.L. card? Is it part of the base set? I've never seen it before. I always learn new info from these boards.

There's an approximately 63% chance you'll see something you never saw before in an Al/Bob post. I had never seen that Mattingly before either.

The Mattingly card came inside of a book called "World of Baseball" I believe.
Print marks and lines used to be annoying and devalued cards. Molitor/Trammell rookie comes to mind... I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around the value of a magenta print mark on a card.
I suppose the NNOF Frank Thomas led the collecting community down this wormhole.
Ah well- I don't mind us reliving 1988-1991 baseball for the rest of time. Those are my collecting glory days anyway.
I have half a vending case in my storage closet. Maybe I will get off my butt and go through it.
I hear ya. I have two vending cases of 88 Topps, a wax case, some stray boxes and some rack cases in the storage closet. Same with 89 Topps. Though, what I have noticed is that 1989 Topps rack cases don't seem to be around much. Not that I've actually looked that hard for them, honestly. I'm sure they're plentiful on Ebay, but I don't see them on BBCE. May tap into another wax box on Saturday to see if there are any other worthless gems in there.
anyone wants a magenta slash message me, I have 2 left, so I can part with one for a fee., lol
