The 80’s, Love em all, help me choose
So I’ve just recently made my first purchase (see below) since returning to the hobby. I took a few years off from active collecting. I’ve decided I am going for the nostalgia this time around, and primarily collecting the 80’s. Which was the decade I got into and fell for this hobby. Something about acquirig the cards , I coveted from a distance as a kid. Could only dream of attaining these cards back then.
So life started to get in the way mentally and financially for me. I took a break and sold a lot. I am aiming to come back with a focus. This hobby can get out of hand quickly.
I’ve narrowed down my next purchase to 4-5. What do you guys think and why? Obviously all good choices , but for different reasons. If you enjoy a card that’s not on my list, please feel free to mention it.
But first, my new addition...
- Griffey 89 UD
- Clemens 84 fleer update
- Henderson 81 Topps in a 9
- Boggs 83 Topps
- Sandberg 83 Topps

The Griffey and Mattingly would be the top two for me on your list. What about 1986 Donruss Jose Canseco Rated Rookie?
Will definitely get around to the Canseco, 85 Topps Puckett as well
First, welcome to the board and welcome back to the hobby!
About 4 years ago I did the exact same thing you are doing now, albeit on a much larger scale. I went for the big rookies like you are but also went after cards that have little-to-no value now but were big when I was a kid (Ruben Sierra rookies), all in PSA 10. I think I started out with a about 80 cards on a spreadsheet. As I progressed, the checklist grew. The checklist ended up being around 400 cards from 1980-1992 (mostly 1985-1989, my wheelhouse).
I didn't finish it and need to get back on it but was able to check off most of the major cards I wanted. It was easily the most fun I have had in the hobby since I collected as a kid back in the 80s. Enjoy your trip down memory lane and I'll enjoy following your thread as you do. Don't be afraid to go cheap. Some of the best memories for me came from $10 purchases.

Thanks for the kind words, and the scans. My focus is basically exactly what yours was. 85-89 my wheelhouse as well. I will absolutely be diving into the cheapies. It was all special. I will definitely be picking up an ‘87 Wally Joyner Gold Cup, and of course the Ruben Sierras. All the cards that I coveted. Will post, hopefully with a story, as I proceed
