Serena Williams?

Seems to be a little more interest in some cards outside of the big 4 (baseball, basketball, football, hockey). Some are referring to Serena as the “GOAT” in the sports arena. Anyone think her cards/memorabilia may move up?

I have never met a single person who collects tennis cards. I say no. Just don't see a demand for it.

No. No interest in tennis cards by manufacturers nor collectors. Even if they did I don’t think her recent meltdown would make her rival Judge, Trout, and Altuve.

Who knows? I remember buying Topps 1984 football sets for $10 in 1989. Dealers couldn't find a lot of interest.

I don't understand people referring to her as the greatest athlete ever. She's not even remotely close to the best in her own sport (tennis). There are literally hundreds of men that would beat her - now or historically. If she's not the best at tennis, how can she the best overall? She can't, that's how.

If you wanna say most successful, I'll give you that. That's different. But best? No way.

In my opinion, she is the best female tennis player ever. I don’t believe those referring to her as the GOAT are including males in the comparison. Who within the female athlete arena is better?

  • Dpeck100Dpeck100 Posts: 10,912 ✭✭✭✭✭

Her SI rookie is very condition sensitive and difficult to get out of the magazine. I just checked EBAY and there are two sales and they are much higher than where they were at a few years ago.

I could see them going some higher. If you want to bet on a modern tennis player she is obviously very well accomplished. I sold some 86 Panini Supersport PSA graded stickers years ago and had tough luck. A few years later others sold some and they did much better. Perhaps interest has broadened some to tennis items.

I agree, the Tiger Woods SI for kids is selling for big bucks in top condition. I think hers has some room to move up.

Nice cards, thanks for sharing. Not surprised to see collectors in this arena. I am purchasing the SI for Kids Serena Williams card and plan to keep adding superstar athletes outside of the big 4 sports.

Here's a great page from which to start hunting for ideas about collecting outside of the big 4:

  • Thanks, I was not aware of this. I guess there are quite a few folks putting together sets outside the big 4.

And that link was just player sets. There are of course the company sets and such too for items outside of the 4.

In their latest ad - the controversial one with a certain quarterback - Nike calls Serena the greatest athlete ever. I've also heard her referred to as the greatest tennis player - no gender qualification - ever by many people. One such reference landed John McEnroe in some hot water a year ago when he specified "female tennis player" and people got upset with him for it.

I don't think there's any question she's the best female tennis player ever.

Tennis card collector here. There is no way that Serena is the best of all time. Steffi Graf and Margaret Court are the best players of all time. Graf is the only tennis player in history to win the Golden slam. And Court holds the record for most championships won(192) No other player comes close. Graf also holds the record for weeks ranked at #1(377).

WNBA rookies actually sell for quite a bit.

"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Graf won all 4 slams in '88, just awesome. I'd put Navratilova up there as well. She has a career grand slam in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles.

Margaret Court would get blown off the court by Serena. The power difference would be gigantic.

Graf would be a fun matchup. I think Serena wins the vast majority of the time but I would love to see that match. Graf's speed would be a nice balance to Serena's power, not that Steffi was short on power either.

Totally disagree. Give Serena 1970's equipment, and Court would win. This is the quote from the international tennis hall of fame,

of Margaret Court; “For shear strength of performance and accomplishment there has never been a tennis player to match her.” This is true in both singles and doubles. Court also won over 40 major doubles and mixed doubles titles to go along with her 24 major singles titles, and has the highest winning match percentage in history.

The power difference would be overwhelming regardless of the era. And Serena's vastly superior athleticism would rule the day either way. Fact is, she's just a bigger, stronger, faster athlete than Margaret Court could ever have dreamed of being. Yeah, Court won a billion titles in the dark ages when there were like 3 women playing tennis. Serena has played a much higher level of competition and dominated.

Let's also not forget that it was Court who got blown out by 500-year old Bobby Riggs.

Lol you know nothing about the history of tennis. First of all, Riggs threw away the match against billy jean king.

In the world of today's pro baseball game, everyone is considered more athletic and powerful than babe Ruth. Yet most baseball experts still consider Ruth as the best player in history. And Serena is no match for Margaret Court. Serena has played in the weakest era in tennis history. Nice try though.
As john McEnroe recently stated ...'Serena would get beat by the 700th ranked male player in the world LOL.

I can’t comment on Margaret Court, too young to remember her on the court. Martina was as strong as any female tennis player during her day and Steffi Graf was awesome. It will always be subjective to compare athletes of different eras as to “who is the GOAT”.. Brady/Montana, Jordan/Lebron, Ruth/Mays, are a few that come to mind

This is such a laughably incorrect statement I don't know where to begin. I've watched thousands upon thousands of matches over the last 40 years, played competitive tennis myself as well, and have read up quite a bit of the game's history.

First of all, Riggs threw away the match against billy jean king.

Yes, he did. He also blew out Margaret Court. An out-of-shape 50-something blew out the world's #1. You really think he would do that to Serena?

Given that I'm the guy who brought up Serena faring poorly against men, I'm not sure why you mention this.

Also, what McEnroe said is she would be ranked 700th. Not quite the same thing. And that has nothing to do with where she ranks among women.

Look, all you gotta do is look at the two women. Serena is a LOT bigger and stronger than Court ever hoped of being. Sorry, she's not overcoming that gap. Court won 24 Grand Slams but over half occurred in the amateur era and ALL of them were against far less competition than what you see today or even 25-30 years ago when Steffi and others were dominating.
    She was great.

    But Serena is better.

Thanks for proving once again that you know little about the history of the game. In the 60's when Court was winning all these tournaments against amatuers.....There was NO women's pro tour. So the best players in the world were AMATUERS. Court also was not a small woman herself. She had good size. How tall is Serena? Not that it matters. There are plenty of men's and women's players that are big and and strong. That doesn't mean success on the tour. Some of the biggest hitters in the game weigh 150 LB's and are 5 ft 9 or less. Tennis is 90% mental. I coached tennis at the collegiate level. By record, Court is by far the best player to ever play the game.

The point you make about Court and amateurs is sort of similar in a way to how Vladislav Tretjak is rightfully considered to be easily among the top few goaltenders in the history of hockey (all eras) even though he never played in the NHL.

True, but can you put either one of them at the very top when they didn't play against professional competition?

It's hard to compare eras. Steffi had some incredible competition in her day too. She over-powered her opponents like Serena, but I would give Serena the edge.
