1940 Cent PCGS PR64CAM....No takers at $1199

JW Cameo had this coin on e-Bay, but it didn't get any bids. It has a pop of just 1 in all grades, and I might have been tempted if I wasn't saving for some Mercs. I'm curious, what do the experts here figure such a coin would be worth?

It's a really nice coin. If I had the money, I might buy it.

I don't know if I count as an expert, but I do have three early Lincoln Proof Cameos. I think that it will not stay a pop 1 for very long. There will be a few others, and most likely higher. Of the 18 early Lincoln Cameos, there is 1942 in 64 and one lower. All of the other years have 65 or higher (including 1942). I personally think it is a $500 coin. I have bought several coins from Jeff Werlin, and I like him and his coins. I just think this one is overpriced.

    And that's my CAM .02.

All of you knew I had to get in on this one.I agree with Doug. The coin will not be a pop 1 for long and there will be better examples in the future.Jeff IMHO is reaching on this one.David Hall did the same thing with the 1936 PR66 CAM Lincoln. This is just my opinion, take it for what it is worth.

  • I was surprised at how expensive PR 67 Cameo Mercury dimes were. I also saw a Merc in 64 Cam go for about $500. That does seem a little funny to me and I guess it seems funny to JW Cameo. Perhaps the buyers really do expect many more Cameos in the '63-65 range.

there seems to be several early cameos surfacing lately. in the last year and a half i've seen a cameo buffalo, a walker, mercs, jeffersons and now a cent from 1936-1942. i figure there should be some stashed away in sets that will come out as old time collectors die and there collections make it to market. it's never made sense to me that from 1936-1942 the mint forgot how to make cameos and then remembered again in 1950!!image there are enough cameos from the 1800's and early 1900's to logically asume that some exist for this period, but where are they??

It seems that the 1936-1942 proof issues are all taking off in price in the past 2-3 years. I just saw a raw proof washington sell for nearly MS65 money.

When I looked at the scan it appeared to me that the coin was a DCAM. The label which should be light blue appeared to be white. It seemed to me that the scan had been "doctored" to make the coin look better than it was. Am I wrong? I would appreciate some expert opinion. I too do not believe this coin in a PCGS64CAM is a $1k+ value. However, the scan makes the coin look like a PCGS69DCAM and if this is correct, then it obviously would be worth in the thousands. Steve

Let's just say he "enhances" the pictures. I don't agree with it. He has a 1942 on EBay also in PR64CAM. The asking price? $499. The BIN price? $549.

thanks for the above two posts. i had that all typed out and ready to send---thought it might sound heavy handed or be misunderstood so i deleted it. when i look at a scan i base my first impression off of the slip color much the same way i adjust the color on my television off of the skin color, cause i have a good idea what it should look like. the slip in that scan appears to me to be faint pink which would mean the seller enhanced the "redness" of the cent. seems to be a common practice and i've long wondered if some of these people think we don't know the true color is light blue. to the sellers credit, he at least shows the full slab. some sellers crop to just show the coin which doesn't allow for my comparison.
