Would acetone be the best way to remove this small patch of crud?

You never know until you try it. May take several days of soaking, then roll with a Q-tip.

edit: JMO, the rim damage is worse than the "crud."

Depends on what the material is, glue residue, acetone would work. If it’s corrosion acetone won’t touch it.

So the crud appears slightly greenish to me. This could be verdigris turned to corrosion. In which case if the crud comes loose it may leave pitting. I would do acetone for several days. If you decide to pick at it with a thorn, well you know what might happen. Or try a long soak in mineral oil and then roll the q tip over the crud. Peace Roy

I agree I would try soaking it in mineral oil for several weeks. Then see if you can remove it with a thorn. I’ve actually had good results using a wood cuticle pusher.(Don’t tell my wife)

That is too wide. Best to take a round tooth pick and shave one end to a very fine point. Cut the other end into a thin, diagonal, chisel. There is SSSsssssssoooooo much more but that's all I'm going to divulge.

Nothing is secret. Just do some thinking.

Olive or mineral oil for a few days, Some time in acetone ((preferably with an ultrasonic), then fresh acetone and see what you've got. Tou can't know until then what steps to take subsequently

I would not try, if you succeed the underlying copper will look different than surrounding areas.
