Are die cracks a normal occurrence with Mercury Dimes?

I have not studied varieties and the RPM possibilities for Mercs, but I recently saw one and thought it was a little out of the ordinary...or maybe my eyes are just bad and they are common! LOL :)

I have seen quite a few cracked dies in the Mercury dime series...sometimes the dies were used beyond their life cycles...in all denominations.

Die cracks are common for most coins especially before the 20th Century. When you study a particular series they tend to be in the same part of the design. The base of the bust is one usual place. Die breaks on these are more common on the obverse.

I would also add, that they are common to run from the rim into the upper part of the wing of Liberty's cap. Most die cracks in this series tend to be radial rather than circumferential. Once you get into the larger denominations such as Half Dollars and Dollars you see more of the circumferential die cracks.

    Example.
    .

Nice. The one I saw was a 43-D. It had a similar crack from the hair at the forehead, through the neck and down to the rim. The reverse had one near the MER to the rim. Thanks for this example! :)

Lots of die cracks in the Merc series. Especially in the 40's. Lots of varieties also. If you have an interest in varieties let me know I have extra's.

Thanks! I guess the vammer in me is still trying to come out retirement even though I am trying not to go too deep back into that segment of collecting. I appreciate everyone's replies.
