1986 Topps Nolan Ryan - vending and wax box break

Hello everyone. Long time reader, first time poster. I was into the hobby from about 1987 to 1991 then abandoned it until a couple years ago. Typical story, I bet. It was a rainy Saturday in Texas and I pulled out a half-full wax box of 1986 Topps and a couple 1986 vending boxes out of a case I purchased a few years ago. Pulled six Nolan Ryan cards out of the lot. Now, I've never submitted anything to PSA because the form looked like something I would do at tax time. I have a lot of unopened material (nothing rare, mostly 1981-1989) and have been thinking about breaking and submitting cards. I wanted to know what you all think of these Ryan's. It looks like my scanner picked up dust bits that show on the sleeves and the black area of the card.

Welcome and welcome back to the hobby!

FWIW, I wouldn't submit any of these to PSA. Among a couple of other issues, what jumps out is that the upper corners on all of them don't look very sharp (very common for 1986 Topps). None look to be worthy of a 9, which means none would be worth the cost of grading.

    Just my humble 2 cents.

Regardless, hope you're enjoying ripping packs again!

Always looking for tougher PSA 10's of Nolan Arenado, Alex Bregman, Mookie Betts, Francisco Lindor, and Mike Trout.

None of those would get a 10, in my opinion. 1986 Topps is very tough.

2, 3, 5, 6, 8 don't have sufficient centering for a 10. The others have corner touches or chipping on black sections. Take a look at some of the ebay completed sales for this card in a PSA 10. The black section needs to be virtually pristine with no white showing on the surface or the edges.

Welcome. Glad you found the hobby again. No need to submit to PSA as they are not worth the grading fees. The 1986 topps baseball black borders are impossible and they need to be pristine to receive PSA 9/PSA 10.

Enjoy your rips. 80s baseball packs are fun and bring back some great memories.

  • Thanks for the advice, guys. The vending case of 86 Topps was not in the best of shape, even though I bought it from baseball card exchange. The case was factory sealed, but you could tell it had been moved around a lot and it had that "it's been in the garage for 25 years" smell to it. The cards were perfectly set from the factory in the boxes in the typical pattern, but there were small dings and dents to just about every card. It was a bit frustrating.

I think the 4th one would get a 9. 1 or 2 others would have a small chance at a 9. Submit the 4th one and sell the others on ebay for a couple bucks!

    Hiya Chris

Welcome back to the hobby and to our forum buddy!

I'm with those that believe these are not worth paying for submission.

I've pulled Ryans like that right from a pack - amazing how poor they can be.

Good luck and don't be a stranger.

  • Went through another few 1986 vending boxes and it was painful, so I stopped. There are about 15 left and they will stay "left" in the closet. I appreciate the feedback from you guys. Right now I'm thinking of pulling out some 1982 Topps cello to open for Saturday afternoon while watching college ball. For the fun of it, may break open a 1988 Topps wax box during the Ohio State vs TCU game.

I bought a lot of ten 1986 vending boxes long ago and couldn't make it through more than 7-8 before I gave up. They're brutal.

i think those are all 8s or less - no reason to submit as others have also said.

I used to dislike 1986 Topps. They have been growing on me lately.
