My first nice sports card purchase! Walter Payton RC PSA 4

So this is currently the most expensive card I own. I know it's not much but I bought it for $55. I am very happy with it, the eye appeal is very nice IMO. The only reason I believe it didn't grade higher was because of how off center the back is. Do you guys agree? Any input is great, thanks!

The reason it didn’t grade higher is the bottom right corner.

The back centering didn’t impact the grade at all.

Great looking card. The bottom right corner would not drop it to a 4 unless it has a crease in it. My guess is there is a crease we can’t see making it a 4. Either way a very nice example with great eye appeal.

Sweetness!! Congrats on a nice pick up.

  • Nice eye appeal and great buy. I'll second what someone said above - there's got to be a crease or something on the card, or maybe that mark on the back near the top left corner is it. There also appears to be an indentation on the back, on the border stripe beneath the "?".

Nice card, though. These are the type I prefer for the bulk of my collection - forget the grade, the card looks great and you didn't have to spend and arm/leg.

I actively collect Kirby Puckett. I have collections of Michael Jordan, Emmitt Smith, Roberto Clemente, Dwight Gooden, Tom Seaver, Errict Rhett and Evan Longoria.

Incorrect. That corner is considered a crease. Look closely.

Regardless of how it earned the "4" grade, it's a nice card with excellent eye-appeal and a decent price. The danger with cards like this (that look a good bit better than their assigned grade) is more in the past now; I'm referencing the days when a nice-looking raw card, in a screwdown or top loader, looked every bit the Ex-MT card you paid up for, until you got it out of its holder and saw the hidden soft creases, wrinkles, trimming... etc.

Slabbing, while not perfect, has done quite a bit to alleviate such things. Nice card!

That is why I said about the bottom corner “unless it has a crease in it” since I cannot see definitively if it does based on the scan, but that was incredibly helpful for you to clarify.

Great looking PSA 4. As far as the reverse centering, it is not as large a factor in a card's grade. There are PSA 10's with 90/10 centering on the back. Each corner has some wear, the bottom right as has been mentioned above, and the ink splotches, a few small chips on left edge. I think it is a great looking card and one to be proud to own. PSA 4's are being offered now between $80-$140 and I think you got a steal of a price at $55
