My 1980 Topps Rickey Henderson Gamble x2: Would you buy these 2 for $100???

Wondering what the board would think of this purchase from the LCS, $50 each. Both cards have:

(1) Good Centering
(2) Little to no snow
(3) Sharp corners albeit not "razor sharp" perfect ones
(4) Minimal to no chipping on edges

Do you think these would grade 8s? Thanks for your input, and lmk if you think this purchase was:

(a) Great, you did very well!
(b) Ok, you'll probably just break even
(c) You overpaid/lost on this one
(d) Impossible to speculate based on scans/// not having them in person

Note: I plan on keeping one if I get an 8 out of them....

Edit, note there is a slight "steaky whiteness on left, that is on the scanner, also small smudgy thing bottom right on right card"

The one on the right has chipping on the bottom and perhaps a stain in bottom right corner (though that could be in the card saver). From the back two corners are touched. If the stain isn’t on the card, like you say, I’d say 7.

The one on the left seems it has a slight tilt and tough to tell from a an but registration seems off. I’d say a 7 here too.

I love Rickey almost as much as Rickey loves Rickey. But 7s are $40 cards (after grading fees). And not much premium even a half grade higher.

I never mind paying the LCS a fair price maybe above eBay in this price range. They deserve it. But you’re not getting Rich off this one, sorry to say.

The one on the right is an easy 8 if that smudgy thing is not on card.
Left one has a good chance at 8, worst feature is top right corner.

Anyway, they're nice quality cards for 50 bucks each.

As we’ve seen over and over again, slight tilt, even severe tilt, has no negative effect on PSA grade provided centering requirements are met.

Nice pickup. I would take them.

One on right, Bottom right corner where the blue line 0utlines the card. Large stain bubble lift. Back of the card has one too on the bottom slightly to the right on the blue edge. I think it is a 5 because of these bubbles.

  • I would say you have at least an 80% chance of being disappointed in the end on this. Plus you have to pay and wait for the grading. I would say just look for a high end 8 or maybe even and 8.5 already graded

I agree with handyman. I think you're looking at a 7, maybe a 7.5 at the card on the left and a 5 or 6 at the card on the right. Centering is a bit low T/B on both cards for 1980, also. I'd hold out for a nicer raw card or buy a nice 8.

Thanks for all the comments, guys. I probably need to clean my scanner! That said, I'm still convinced one of these could hit an 8 and think I will send both in. The right one does have some minor ingrained wax but some of the other issues are scan related

Hey guys, grades came in. 8s on both. Will be selling one and keeping one. Just wanted to follow up in case anyone wants to know/see what an 8 Henderson raw looks like

Congrats on the grades! It's stories like these that keep the faith going that there is still good raw material out there.

I can't guess a grade based off a scan. I need to loupe them myself. Both of these cards look decent and congrats on hitting your goal! Personally I wouldn't submit late 70's anything without confidence in a straight 9. Eights from this time period do nothing for me. That's just my personal preference. We all are different and thats a good thing.

I overshoot on my cards and undershoot on yours. On average, I’m spot on.

Even though it’s not out until June or July, I heard Rickey has a brief cameo in Toy Story 4.

Pretty proud of these 2, very cool to be 2/2 on 8s which is what I thought they COULD get. Keeping one for the PC it will nice to know how I got it there, self-subbing is very rewarding.
