Can anyone explain the missing date and the indention on the back?
The missing date looks like the material was never removed where the date should be.

This is called a "Cud" or major die break. Nice find! Someone can tell you what it is worth.

BTW, notice how the area on the reverse is indented. That's because the planchet metal filled the "hole" in the die where the date was. Look up cud on the internet.

And, on the opposite side (on the reverse) the design is missing because the die on the obverse had that missing chunk, so the metal on the reverse was not held in place or pressed much because there was no resistance from the other side.
