Have you ever "Ignored" a member on any web forum?

Insider2Insider2 Posts: 14,452 ✭✭✭✭✭

I discovered the internet forums about 3 - 4 years ago. I just "Ignored" the first poster ever thinking I could eliminate seeing his discussions keep popping up. Unfortunately, they are still there. Oh well, after posting on a few of his discussions when he first joined, I stopped opening them. I was just hoping not to have them cluttering up my screen.

Have you ever ignored a member? If you care to tell us, why?

No Names Please as I've been ignored in the past. :p LOL!

No. Probably have not agreed with some posts, but many have disagreed with mine. Never had posts that bothered me to the point of ignoring that individual.

There was a short time that I ignored non-US folks on Blowout sportscard forum...mostly because I didn't want to get involved with international buying(or selling for that matter) I soon realized I was missing out on lots of good information in general. Sometimes "buying and selling modes" cloud judgement. It didn't take me too long to change this part of my thinking.

You can ignore them but they can still flag your comments. The mods are very tolerant. I'd like to see a group of a dozen long-time important members form a secret "vigilante" group to help get the stalkers and disagreeable, long-time, lurkers who contribute nothing but "flags" to the discussions eventually banned for good!

Let's see if I can raise a few from under the bridge.

No, but I have occasionally been tempted to consider the possibility of maybe ignoring a poster or two who annoys, or worse, offends me. But, I set a very high bar since it is a very bold move, if not in a practical sense, then in a figurative one.

I try to find something redeeming in (almost) everyone (it's that darn positive influence from @Paradisefound - has anyone discovered a cure yet? ;):p )

I have on occasion decided to stop replying to some posters, such as the previously mentioned ones who specialize in rare parking lot errors.

I have a pretty strong filter, maybe as a result of seeing so much craziness over the years, so I let my mind act as sieve.

I never thought I'd ignore anyone anywhere.

But on a non-coin site I picked up my own personal troll who'd follow me around the net and post nonsense and gibberish usually in the form of something that could be mistaken for English. The software would hide his posts which I'd usually read eventually after I steeled myself sufficiently.

It was ineffective. There's just no way to deal with trolls and they have to be left to the moderators.

Unless you have a working [delete] button you can't lead except by example.

This might just be an elaborate ploy by @Insider2 to ferret out their ignorers...

If someone does not reply to this thread then maybe it is because they are ignoring the OP. :*

Or maybe I am overthinking it. :D

If a member here tries to "bait" me into re-debating a topic that the Market has already pretty much decided (and not in his favor) then I'll just zing him once or twice about it and then let the matter drop. It might seem like ignoring, but it's not, it's simply resting my case. It's fun for both of us that way. ;)

How true and that's the way it should be as it is their site, they moderate it (giving us lots of rope I'll add :)), and we get to post at their pleasure. However...

Now, I don't know what goes on behind the screen (I've been warned before and it scared the ---- out of me); but I think they could really clean up the stalkers, retaliators, and forum trash in one day of intense effort. Heck, one post by the administrators warning all of us about childish behavior could be done in less than ten minutes. Then, add some warnings for a week before the hammer falls on repeat offenders. Apparently, there are some >:) members on CU who add nothing except flags as they believe it's their personal job to police content.

Post count is self-explanatory, The stars are largely driven by the number of likes/agrees/LOLs you get (they result in badges which add to the point total.)

I would love to know whats the point in flagging someone and/or disagreeing with someone hundreds of times and they still haven't been suspended, banned or otherwise deleted from this forum.

Puddintane, ask me again and I'll tell you the same. B) I had my ID posted on my page but it disappeared many months ago and I don't know how to put it back. :(

    1. By the way,,,how do all these folks that have only been here about a year or less get 5 STARS and
      thousands of posts ?

One misconception (mine in the beginning), was stars indicated their numismatic knowledge. Not true. Some of us don't have a life. Others, add a lot to the forum with their discussions and personalities. The big secret is the Mods can bump the number of stars at will so it does not matter on the number of badges or points exclusively. Many of the most important numismatists in the country who post here only have three or four stars.

The Point is that even a drop of water (drip, drip, drop) over a period of time will wear away hard rock.

Look, most of us are adults. This place possibly rolls along without much interference from a moderator. On another web sight, there are at least six active moderators who take turns. The head mod explained that there is NO WAY to watch everything in all the different forums at any time. He only looks in on most threads due to a request from a member(report, flag, PM).

Heck, when was the last time you looked at the stamp forum? See?

Now, each of us has a record here. I'm going to use Ricko as an example of a well regarded member. Just how long do you think ANYONE here would last if they started stalking his posts, leaving flags and disagreements w/o a reason? Unfortunately, "disagreements" w/o comment, while IMO add nothing, should not be stopped UNLESS it is obvious that the member doing it is just being a disagreeable child.

I was the object of three different children. They are no longer here and don't deserve to be. IMO, there are one or two children still disrupting CU for various reasons. It is probably a personality thing. We are human and very different. Some folks are born to be disagreeable as they consider themselves "special" arbitrators of manners.

The good thing is that even when given a long rope, they will reach the end of it and be banned. The more members who flag and report those members using unnecessary flags and posts claiming to retaliate for spite, the sooner the mods will respond and restore equilibrium and calm.

@Insider2 , I know you were the victim as I noticed every time I read your posts, you had a disagree. It was obvious and you shouldn't be banned for having over 1,000+ of them. If the jerk was banned for that, IMHO all of his disagrees should have vanished. Is this forum a perfect child...no and still needs tons of work, but it is free and fun, for me still.

BTW, you couldn't pay me to be a moderator here.

Formally, no. But there are some posters (mostly elsewhere that I'll skip over or at most skim).

I still haven't figured out why it really matters if one has thousands of disagrees or flags or whatever. It doesn't seem to have any impact on anything so I would have much better things to worry about.

So feel free to disagree with this post :)

Let me try to help. You may end up banned. That's why it matters.

Additionally, suppose you are giving a lecture to a group and one person on the stage smacks you for no reason at the start of each new sentence and one person in the crowd yells "shut up you creep" every so often. Is it more clear now?
