1948 Leaf baseball

I’m just getting into this set and not sure where it will go, but feel I need to get more educated on it. It seems as though there can be quite a bit of color variations - for example, on the Musial, his hat can sometimes appear red and other times blue. The shade of the background can vary greatly. What should I be on the lookout for? What’s the most desirable and can expect to pay a premium for?

Thanks.

The set was actually issued in 1949, and consists of 98 cards, skip numbered, and issued in two series. The first series is common, the 2nd series is very scarce. So much so that cards were still being discovered in the early 70's.
There are high numbers and low numbers in both series.
In addition to the 98 cards there are 3 main variations, all in the common series. Aberson is pictured with either short (scarcer, but not really tough) or long sleeves, Hermanski is shown with his full name or with the missing i (the tougher variation, and the scarcest of all of these) on the end (Hermansk), and Peterson is shown with a red cap (tougher version) or darker cap.
Besides that, due to lack of quality control there are tons of color variations. They don't seem to command a premium other than white background variations that are rarely seen.
Most people concentrate on collecting the set with the 3 main variations, that can take years and run into 10's of thousands- especially with Paige really going thru the roof price wise. The color variations are fun and usually inexpensive .
Old Cardboard issue #9 has the definitive article written on the set. Hope this helps.
