Mac Users Please Help.... I've suffered a major intellectual disability thanks to iCloud :(

When I upload my newly shot coin photos they go directly to iCloud.

iClould will not allow me to edit any of these photos.

How do I transfer all my photos from the iCloud to an external hard drive?

Thanks in advance! :)

Should I not reply back soon it's because I might be at a pub after having banged my head against the wall trying to figured this out on my own.

I can't help as I never use the cloud, someone else I am sure can help.

Here is how I do it for a couple of terabytes of information.

I have 5 external hard drives because I am an OCD freak and a professional photographer.

All 5 drives have the exact same information as drives can and do fail.

3 of the drives are literally buried underground away from structures in case of a California Brush Fire.

    I got my own cloud.

That's like beyond OCD pushing hard drive polygamy.

    Are you Mormon?

If so how many wives do you have as they can fail too.

I see you edited which leads to another question....

How many spare wives do you have buried?

One wife married for 28 years and she is still a fox <3

I do have another 10 or so external hard drives laying around that are older and still working, but I switched to all new drives.

I also had a 4 TB internal drive put in my mac so that I can have all my photos in a file on my desktop for super fast retrieval.

    For anyone else beyond EOC...

When I drag my photos to the hard drive I get an error message.

They will not export out of iCloud to the hard drive either.

If I try to edit photos in iCloud with Photoscape they revert back to original state once done.

The "cloud" means you lose control over your property. Do you really want to do that?

Distributed data storage ("cloud storage") can benefit very large data users. But for individuals and small businesses it is a waste of money, time and data security.....Users must pay every month or your data will be held for ransom or possibly discarded. Users are limited to slow internet data rates unless you pay extra for an optical backbone connection and then do the same for your office. Users do not actually know who accesses their data, or when it happens, or if copies were made. The "big boys" can pay for this information and protect themselves - individuals cannot.

No but that's where photos go since upgrading to High Sierra OS.

    "still in a box"

When I was young and looking for a wife we would refer to certain types of ladies as being "plastic"

    Some guys like that look

I like a natural original skin on my coins. :*

Sadly, all that seems to do is upgrade Apple's control over your property and your money.

I have not read the apple icloud agreement but no way they take your rights on intellectual property and photos. If I am wrong I will admit it. Doubt it tho.

Your photos should also be in the Mac's Photo app. You can export the photos from there to your hard drive. I really don't understand why you can't edit the photos. I have all my photos on my hard drive and on iCloud and I have no problem with editing. You can always choose to not have your photos upload to iCloud.

as @robec said. Your images should still be in the Photo app I believe. You'd just need to export them to a folder. Do you connect your camera directly to the computer or take out the memory card and plug that into a slot? Either way, you should be able to tell it where you want the images to be saved. I'm on an iMac here at work right now and every time I pop a card into my computer it shows up on the desktop and I just copy the file wherever I need it to go.

What program are you using to edit your images normally? Talk us through your process and maybe we can figure it out.

I fly through clouds so for that reason I don’t store anything in them.

Not on the app just on the cloud and I'll try some more a bit later.

I was able to place them in a folder which I just titled as My Photos which I also tried to export without any success.

I use Photo Scape and photos on my external hard drive are no issue, just any new ones taken since upgrading the operating system.

If you can place the photos in a folder on your actual computer hard drive, when you open up your photo editing app you should be able to import them somehow.

There must be a way to turn off the automatic upload to iCloud that is going on every time you plug in your camera or memory card.

Try this, Launch your Mac's Photo App. From Photos menu (upper left corner) choose Preferences. When the page open pick iCloud. Put a check in the box with the red circle. This should put all your photos on your hard drive.......hopefully.

You're that rare bird that takes it as a compliment when told that you "go around with your head in the clouds"...because you actually do :p

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Not really. I keep a rotation of four sets of backups, plus various data archives on retired (read slower, lower capacity) drives, in two separate locations.

I've been in IT for over 30 years, and it's not that far from a data backup scheme used before enormous disk arrays. Except I don't keep an offsite backup in my trunk anymore.

I have 10's of thousands of hours invested in my photo (and video) archive. It's all digital, and totals about 4 TB. It would be catastrophic to lose it.

It would be like all the silver in your collection suddenly melting. How much of it could be replaced? How would you replace it?

No such thing as too paranoid.

As Robec pointed out, even in High Sierra you have the choice where to put your images and mine are on my Mac or external drives. Since I have and would never put anything in a Cloud, I am not sure how to retrieve them but for future, just make sure you specify where to save them.
