Immaculate Shohei Ohtani Auto 1/1

So by some miracle I pulled a Ohtani Bat knob auto 1/1 out of Immaculate case break 2 nights ago. I know his market is down right now so I am not looking to sell immediately and I will be sending out to grade either PSA or BGS haven't decided yet but I am curious what others would hypothetically do if in my position to maximize value. Any ideas/suggestions welcome

  • I would look VERY closely at the card and determine if a BGS 9.5 or a PSA 10 is likely. If not, a 1/1 that would grade out a PSA 7 would be better in a PSA Authentic holder. Post pics either way, amazing pull!

Awesome card, I wouldn't be in a rush to sell, unless it was an emergency. He probably will have to get surgery at some point, either at the end of the year, off season or early next year. Many players do fine after the surgery and some have a resurgence. I hope surgery is not the case with him, but I still am optimistic he has a great career ahead of him. He has been an absolute joy to watch.

I would hold tight for now. Yes, enjoy the card ! You could list it during the holidays as a BIN or wait until next spring.

oh definitley not selling right away. News came out today that surgery was never on the table low end of the spectrum grade 2 sprain and he never had any pain (Grade 2 covers a wide range of damage as a grade 1 is a usually a stretch or pull and a 3 is a complete tear while grade 2 covers everything in between)

Now i am debating who to submit to for grading. Card is in wonderful condition

He has been wonderful to watch. I've been chasing an auto all year so I nearly had a heart attack when I saw 1/1 on it

Question ??? If Ohtani DOES NEED to get arm surgery can he hit in the meantime while his pitching arm is shut down for that 1-1.5 years? IF you are an Ohtani Bull it seems that would be an answer you would like to hear a "yes" to.

If he has any surgery on his UCL it will be Tommy John....he could potentially return to hitting before pitching, but he wouldn’t be swinging a bat for 4-6 months minimum after TJ.

Always looking for tougher PSA 10's of Nolan Arenado, Alex Bregman, Mookie Betts, Francisco Lindor, and Mike Trout.

  • I am quite excited to see him pitch tonight obviously. I think it is a risk but I am not a doctor so I really have nothing to base that off of besides what I see on the news and from having watched Strasburg so closely as I am a Nationals fan. I would venture a guess that if things go poorly that they plan on converting him into a 1B and also DHing him. It's always been a conspiracy theory of mine that the real reason the red sox let Babe Ruth go to the yankees was damage to his elbow. in 1917 he pitched 326 innings the next year only only 166 and 133 in his last year with the sox. The Yankees only had him pitch about 16 innings total in '20 and '21 and he got shelled pretty good but by then they obviously knew what his bat could do and the rest is history

Looks like Tommy John surgery has been recommended.

I would be unloading any Ohtani card as quickly as possible while he is atleast still in the lineup hitting. He may come back and be a great player post TJ surgery but he may not have the same hype around him anymore and therefore would affect his card values.
