Nice Array of Proofs and Mints (1960's to Early 2000's)

I have a well-inventoried collection that belonged to my late father. About eight (8) file boxes full, 1700 pieces maybe all in original mint packaging. PCGS price guide value at around 12K. My dealer, that I trust and have used for years, offered just over half that.

Any comments? Don't deal with P's and M's much. No feel for market. Is this normal?

50 % of value for a dealer seams fair to me. I know we all want top dollar but a dealer is in business to make money . I have always lived by the rule " retail is 80% of catalog, wholesale is 50 % of that or roughly dealer purchase price is 40 % of catalog. If you want top dollar and willing to wait. maybe Stacks and Bowers auction.

Thank you for this thought. I agree--I'm having a hard time thinking otherwise. He's got to inventory those and mess with them plus try to make a little money. I was pretty satisfied with the offer. And I'm tired of storing those things. Away they go...

There are some error coins in these sets. Some are rather valuable. Difference between a $4 proof set and a $300 proof set.

I kind of agree with Bob Sr. If everything is in original mint packaging, it's going to take time & effort to disperse and even if you were to sort through it to cherrypick whatever errors there might be, that's an education process plus more time & effort.

The only caveat would be if there is bullion in the collection that can be more easily separated and liquidated with less effort.

Aside from the nostalgic component of these collections, which we all feel when the inventory is inherited, it always surprises me when I open a set to inspect for an error or small date, etc. These coins are just beautiful. Makes it hard to sell some of these for a few dollars. But, when it's time to go it's time to go.

Less than 10 seconds to open and inspect a couple different years for no S, etc, etc. Difference between $4 and hundreds of dollars?....spend the 5 minutes.
