Turn back the clock; vintage unopened

PWCC's new market research is pretty cool. From what i can tell, you can not get this information from any other source. And according to the disclaimer, these have been verified PAID.

1975 Topps Baseball Rack Box Unopened 24 Rack Packs Nov 22, 2009 $4,900.00
1975 TOPPS BASEBALL RACK BOX Jun 6, 2005 $1,351.00
1972 Topps Baseball Card--Wax Tray Pack Aug 25, 2008 $1,000.00
1980 Topps sealed mint 3 box rack pack case 72 packs Dec 11, 2008 $1,805.00

Interestingly, look up some outlier auctions from the buyers-club era and see how many do NOT show up. Uh..hum..meaning they were not paid for. Can't get that information from the AH's my friends.

Collecting PSA 9's from 1970-1977. Raw 9's from 72-77. Raw 10's from '78-'83.
Collecting Unopened from '72-'83; mostly BBCE certified boxes/cases/racks.
Prefer to buy in bulk.

    Yes, I'd say about 12-14K.

I remember we broke a 75 rack box from Bbce here in CU about 5-6 years ago that was about 7K.

Would love to find a 75 Rack box and do a group rip on the board. I would be in for 2-3 racks personally.

Not too long ago you could pick up an unopened box of minis for $1,200. They were so plentiful on eBay, it was annoying.

I remember buying 5-6 boxes after the Conlon REA auctions for $800-1K a box. Ripped through all of them and had a blast. Saved just one but wish I had saved more, LOL..

    Hiya Tim

My wife would like me to sell some of my stuff.

But, I haven't sold anything since the Carter administration.

Didn't we do a mini rack box break several years ago? I didn't participate in that one, but I swear we did one.

Never a mini rack box. We did a regular 75 rack box, though. Mini racks are exceedingly scarce. When Conlon's estate was auctioned off through REA, he had over 20 mini wax cases, approximately 4 mini cello cases and a grand total of 3 individual 75 mini racks.

Thanks for clearing that up - my memory wasn't so good on that one. I remember a rack box, but didn't remember regular or mini.

Still guesstimate this as the going rate? Didn't know these were still out there as racks are so rare to find 1 or 2, let alone a box full.

My rips from re-entering hobby in 2005....all from BBCE

    (1) 75 Mini box - best card was a Brett, graded an 8
    (1) 77 OPC box...real nice cards, many graded 9's but commons
    (2) 78 OPC box.....absolutely beautiful cards....scored 2 Murray 8's, Ryan 8, Mollie 8....tons of good cards
    (2) 79 OPC box...do not recommend....just not enough valuable star power.....just an Ozzie 8
    (1) 80 wax box
    (2) 81 wax box
    (1) 81 D box....absolutely horrible!! Water damage, et al
    (1) 82 wax box

Also ripped several individual 70 cellos, (1) 72 OPC, (1) 73 wax, (2) 74 wax and (1) 76 wax.....My P/L is severely upside down! Wish I hadn't ripped any of them! Fortunately, most of these were bought between 2006-2012......the 75 mini box was $1350 from Steve...

I busted an epic '78 Topps rack case back in 2005 for $2,700 that yielded a PSA 9 Murray, PSA 10's (THREE) Carltons, ONE Seaver, ONE Morris, ONE Dawson and many others. I sold of one of the three boxes to @CDsNuts who also pulled many nice cards. That same case is available today at BBCE but is now 10 grand.

I have struggled with what to do with most of the 78s I’ve ripped - Topps and OPC - but may send in a few lots to PWCC.

75 rack box would be well above that now, probably in the18K range for a case fresh box, imo, as prices for mid 70s product continue to rise, especially for the tougher items.

Seems to be a well assembled box at least with significant star power on fronts/backs, there's got to be a premium for those.

ETA: ROBIN YOUNT ROOKIE both on the front of a pack as well as back of a pack. GEORGE BRETT ROOKIE on the front of a pack as well as one on the back of a pack. HANK AARON #660 on front. HANK AARON #1 on front and also one on the back of a pack. Phil niekro on front. So 4 racks with key rookies showing, and 3 with Hank Aaron.

Works out to be $1458 per rack, $486 per rack cell, and roughly $35 per card. Yikes!

Premium for star packs, yes, but nearly 1500 per rack when majority are still common racks is still ambitious. Jmho. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to see it sell at 35K as I have two boxes myself.

Understood and I wasn't trying to justify asking price, just that I would expect a premium to be attached to an assembled rack/cello box with significant star power over even a case fresh example. What that %/$ premium is, I have no clue. Would you say $18k is fair retail for this box or something higher?

As a collector, I would actually prefer an original case fresh box vs an assembled star pack box. I would certainly pay a premium for individual star packs, but as a collector of unopened product, the closer a box is to original and intact the better. I bet a 75 rack box FASC would eclipse 40K if one were to surface.

For that box, somewhere in between 18K and his asking price, IMO.

For all the talk about unopened prices softening (and some years have for more easily obtained product) prices for mid 70s and earlier, especially for tougher issues, have been steadily rising over past year or so.

A private transaction recently closed around the $14K range. Could even be the same box, who knows. I would be a little concerned that is not wrapped by BBCE. IMO, something like this sells for about the unit price of each rack X24, with maybe a little more juice.

The mid 70’s and earlier have pretty much passed what I deem as a critical untouchable line. As in what is no longer affordable to the mainstream portion of the collecting population. The only way to do it now is in group endeavors. This isn’t going to end with mid 70’s and earlier. That line will move along into the early 80’s sooner than many probably think. It’s already happening. Anything pre 1987 is going to be scooped up by prospectors and rightfully so. Prices might flat line or lower here and there but the overall movement will be up up and away.

14K is cheap for a legit, full 75 rack box right now. I'd be a buyer all day at that price.

There has been some pretty steady increases on a few things in the early-mid 80's stuff in the last 3 years. 1986 Topps baseball, for example, used to be plentiful at 10 a box. Now it's not less than 20-25 plus shipping. Rack cases used to be 100 or so, now are pushing into the 150-170 range. Those aren't huge dollar increases, but percentage wise they are enormous. 1985 during the McGwire craze was well above 350 a box and then plunged back down to 100 or so. Now it's steadily rising and is back to 150 or so a box, more for FASC. Cases are now lots harder to come by as well. 1982 and 1983 seem to have plateaued for a bit. 1984 Topps is now the earliest box you can get regularly for sub-100 each, but I have a hunch that is about to change in the near future. The massive price difference between 1980 Topps and 1981 Topps is phenomenal, and due mostly to the Henderson rookie. But try to find a case of 1981 Topps in either wax or cello. Good luck. I agree that lots of this product is now the only relatively cheap option for people who want to rip boxes or cases, and that as more people do that and as lots of people are priced out of the 1970's, the 1980's are next. Wonder how long it will take (if ever?) for a box of 1987 Topps wax to eclipse 100 a box.
