$1500 to spend, what to do???

Well, since I am too late for a $500 entry into the 55 pack rip....appreciate to hear what would be your choice on card if you had $1500:

  1. Earliest Mantle (very low grade)
  2. Later Mantle (mid grade)
  3. Bird / Gretzky best grade
  4. PSA 10 Bonds
  5. PSA 10 of later 70s HOFs - thinking of something like 78-80s. Idea being to get the “10” grade of lower value / less rare card
  6. Other ideas?

Thanks for ideas.

Steve

Jim Brown PSA 7 rookie all the way, easily the best football player ever!

For $1500, you can pick up two really great cards. Cards guaranteed to go up even more.

Perhaps pick up a Jeter SP in a PSA 8.5. That card in that grade has already risen $100 from Jan 2018. It'll run you between $850 and $925 at the moment. Then pick up Mike Trouts 2011 Topps Update PSA 10. Those are selling for around $600 right now.

    Thats what I would get.

If you plan to hold the cards for at least six years, I'd pickup five or six 1998-99 SP Authentic Vince Carters RCs in PSA 10. Hold and sell when he makes the HOF.

Thanks guys - all good ideas.

Surprised no votes for Mantle. Always so much talk about “buy best Mick you can.....”

I'd be getting a head start on 1971 Topps set...I must've tried to do that at least 3-4 times but for whatever reason I had to sell them (the PSA 7 key cards). :(

Topps Gretzky centered in an 8 or OPC in a 7. For a Mantle you could likely get a 60 or 62 in a 7. Will have to search to find best example, however that is the route I would take.

Mike Trout 2011 Topps Update PSA 10. Hard to believe, but this is a future 1k card.

Pick a favorite sport and buy RCs of players that look to be heading into the HOF in the next couple years. Sell when the hype train comes along and rinse/repeat.

The original post isn’t really clear on whether the goal is to invest the $1500 for a profit or to have fun. Many of the investment suggestions seem sound but not very fun.

IMHO I don't think I would invest in any Vince Carter cards, in fact no cards after late 80's. I would buy your favorite vintage card(s).

Call BBCE and buy the nicest, oldest vintage box you can. So prob. a 1979 or 1980 Topps wax box, and use the leftovers for a nice graded unopened pack. Supply is always diminishing, demand is likewise going up.

Investment wise, Mantles seem to be as safe as anything. I'd consider a mid-grade popular Mantle card. Perhaps 1956 or 1957?

If it's for fun, only you can decide what's the most fun for you. If that's all you're looking for, I'd get some old wax and rip it!

    68 Bench in PSA 8.5
    68 Mantle in 8/8.5
Trout update plus spend $1k on the best Bench or Mantle you can find for the price.

I would caution anyone buying Mike Trout rookies. Great player, with the potential to be in the GOAT discussion but he still has only played 6 seasons. It's risky, I thought Doc Gooden was the next GOAT so I invested heavily! That investment didn't work out so well for me.

True but Gooden clearly wasn't the GOAT after a few years into his career. His numbers started to decline beginning with just his third year where it was obvious that he wasn't the next Koufax or whatever.
