2018 National Recap

I live in Stow, Ohio about 40 minutes from the show so I was able to spend three full days open to close. I really enjoyed the show this year. The volume of material and the quality always amazes me. I was unable to buy any of the rarities I was looking for because I felt the prices were to far out of line with other sources. I understand the show is an expensive proposition for many dealers so I'm not faulting anyone. I was able to buy quite a bit of unopened material for my collection. For the first time at a National I really noticed the large supply of modern material, autographed inserts etc. I wonder if at some point, this material will overtake the vintage material. I also noticed at least my observation that more and more material is not graded, I saw some really nice cards I was interested in but the bottom line is someday my kids will have to sell this stuff and I just prefer PSA graded material. The pack breaking, box breaking is really becoming popular. I almost pulled the trigger on a 1915 Cracker Jack Cobb but ultimately I think I can get it cheaper. Also found a really nice Jackie Robinson signed postcard but again too high in my opinion. I'm really looking forward to Chicago and getting that Cobb !

Interesting comment in reference to modern material in large evidence at the show. I see many dealers are hedging their investment in vintage with modern material. After all if you can flip a high end Trout card and make $$$, one would be wise to take that profit regardless of your vintage inventory. BBCE is offering modern as well, not just vintage. Both have a market share. Down the road it will be interesting to see if the young collectors entering the hobby today, once they age, will want that Satchel Paige PSA 6 or a high end Trout or similar hot player from their age/youth of collecting.
