1971 PSA Strictness

I just bought a couple of PSA 8 1971s and I can’t believe how nice they are. I truly think today’s PSA 8 is as nice as the PSA 9 of yesteryear. I hated the strictness when I was submitting but I love it as a buyer! New flips all the way for 1971.

Those cards are definitely strong for the grade. Very nice.

Those are two beauties right there! Great cards from a really tough set. I agree that the standards are tougher now - when I see cards (in general, not just '71's) in older flips, I am more critical of them.
I have only 1 psa 8 1971 card that i graded myself. i bought it back in the 80's. graded with beckett first and received a 7.5. cut it out and had it graded with psa and got an 8. i agree they are tough on the 1971 issue. oh by the way it is a nolan ryan.
Those are great looking cards my only 8 is a blyleven.
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
The 1971 registry set is not one that I really pursue with much vigor, usually as an afterthought once I've made a purchase of something else. And then usually only when I decide to browse the seller's other items with the free or reduced shipping charges that would come with an additional purchase.
I have 1 complete raw 1971 set, another raw 71 set around 90 percent, and another partial that is maybe 60-70 percent complete, in descending condition from set 1 to set 3, so many times my graded pickups are when I get them on the cheap, with the intent that I may someday crack them out to fill or upgrade a set. (As has been noted on several previous threads, quite often people bid up nice raw cards for more than you have to pay for a similar range graded card. Hence the logic behind that route...)
However, until that day comes, I still have them entered into a registry set. I'm only around #120, with a bit over 10 percent complete, with mostly 7s and nothing lower than a 6.
These are my only NQ 8s, all in the old flips. Your 2 additions certainly put my 8 cards to shame.
@PaulMaul - Very nice pickups for yourself, indeed!
I gave up on the registry for this set because too many cards I was happy with came back 7s...which made me less happy with them! Now I have a combination raw/graded set consisting of raw cards I’m happy with and graded cards I buy. No more submitting 71s for me!
I just submitted about 125 of 'em....got 8's on Aaron and Ryan (which I sent in at a higher level...next 75 or so should pop next week and the rest just went in on a newer submission
I find '71s as really hit or miss depending on the grader. I submitted a bunch of 71s from a high grade set and was getting 6s and 7s on cards that normally would get 8s. Then I submitted a small grouping over a few subs and popped as many 9s on those subs as I had in the entire history of subbing '71s which probably totals 3,000 cards.
It does get very frustrating looking at beautiful cards in 7 holders as you scroll through ugly 8s on the ‘bay.
I think it boils down to what the grader views as “slight wear” to a corner. Some view any hint of white as wear, but I think that’s extreme.
