FROM A PRIOR JUNE SUNDAY THIS MONTH:

NAGASAKI JAPAN MONUMENT COMMEMORATING THE MIRACLE OF THE DISCOVERED CHRISTIANS WHO HAD HID FOR 250 YEARS IN FEUDAL JAPAN

With Christianity banned for two and a half centuries in feudal Japan under the rule of the Edo Period’s Tokugawa Rulers it was not known that groups of Japanese Christians had banned together to secretly practice their faith.

With the approaching defeat of the Edo Period’s Samurai and the approaching emergence of the enlightened Meiji Period under the Meiji Emperor, returning foreigners were first allowed to build a Christian church for their use in Nagasaki.

Upon its completion in the mid 1850s it was viewed as a miracle when the hiding Japanese Christians made their appearance-in the stealth of night - at the just completed church.

In this video at the subject church located on the uphill walkway to Glover Gardens above The Nagasaki port, see the monument that has been erected to celebrate this miracle as well as statues of Father Xavier who had helped bring Christianity to Japan as well as of Christ.

The church itself seen at the beginning of the video is the oldest standing Christian Church in Japan.

OVERLOOKING NAGASAKI JAPAN'S HARBOR FROM GLOVER GARDEN

In the opera Madame Butterfly the protagonist is seen waiting for the return of her lover as she peers from a hill above Nagasaki Harbor, In this below linked video one can share that view. That hill above the harbor is home to Glover Garden and in fact the child of the real life person who inspired Madame Butterfly was adopted by the Glover family.

A Visit to Nagasaki would not be complete without taking in the Peace Park that recounts the role that Nagasaki played in brining World War II to an end:

Link to Video taken at the Peace Park Museum that captures the interactive exhibit there demonstrating the bombing. The Japanese narrative is accompanied by English subtitles:
