Correction, that should be Mt Spurr, not Mt Redoubt as the volcano closest to Anchorage. (Redoubt is closer to Kenai but its eruption too has led to ash falling on Anchorage.)

Ken Morton volunteers a day each week, along with dozens of other train enthusiasts, to bring back to operating condition the last steam locomotive to ply the Alaska Railroad.
Here at the The Great Train Show held at the Anchorage Train Depot in conjunction with the city’s winter festival, Fur Rendezvous, he shares with us both the history of Engine 557 and the current restoration efforts.
Listen as we learn the storied history of Engine 557 built in 1944 as part of the war effort. It was only one of 12 steam engines that made its way to Alaska where it continued to remain in service for 23 years and had the unique advantage of being able to run through flooded waters that the electric diesel engines could not.
When restoration is completed within a year or so it will be the last of the 2,000 some similar steam engines that were manufactured to again operate on tracks in the United States. All but 18 remained in Europe where they had been sent during World War II, and most of those are long gone now as well.
The restoration effort which has been ongoing for twelve years has been made possible by over 200,000 volunteered hours and close to two million dollars in private donations.
Learn from Ken as he tells how you as a member of the public can personally come watch the ongoing restoration in Wasilla Alaska.:
