For this Friday's posting, Photos taken this week on Friday:
View my Video of Nikko's Stunning Kegon Waterfalls as its waters Cascade 320 feet from Iced Cliffs to an Emerald Pond and Stream Below
Kegon Waterfalls located in Nikko National Park close to the world famous Nikko Shrine and Temple Complex is one of Japan's TopThree Greatest Waterfalls.
Dropping close to 100 meters from Japan's highest natural lake, Lake Chugushi, the cascading waters flow into an Emerald Lake and then flow as as a rushing stream.
To reach the observation platform at the base of the falls one must descend down in an elevator that was built in 1930 before World War II.
This video captures from below over a full minute of spectacular beauty as the multi streams of water flow over cliffs studded with icicles and snow under a brilliant blue sky.
Class pictures of the cast of the original 1984 movie Ghostbusters.

Scroll down for Elvis Tribute Artist Dan Middleditch's inaugural cruise ship performance aboard the Diamond Princess in Japan as I filmed it last year.
One year later, in March of 2024, Dan had returned to the Diamond Princess. Before the returned performance I thanked him for coming back to Japan and also for his having given me permission to post the video of that inaugural performance.
He remembered and even added that his Dad had loved getting to see the video. He then explained how much the show had evolved since then. (Notably in watching the new show Dan had incorporated an amazing amount of Japanese language which he had mastered over the twelve months for the partially Japanese audience. As he noted to me that led to having to shorten some of the longer English dialogue.) The new sets, added drama, and costume changes were impressive.
Initially, here are the "Returned Elvis" photos of the Elvis Tribute Artist as photographed this past month in March of 2024.
And here was Dan't inaugural cruise ship performance as an Elvis Tribute Artist aboard the Diamond Princess Cruise Ship from one year ago in March 0f 2023 on the ship's inaugural returned to Japan cruise. I posted this on YouTube last year after getting permission from the performer:

Elvis Tribute Artist Dan Middleditch performs as Elvis Presley singing "Don't Be Cruel" aboard the inaugural returned to Japan Diamond Princess Cruise Ship cruise. Since its infamous mooring in Yokohama's Tokyo Harbor at the beginning of COVID in February of 2020, the Diamond Princess finally returned again to cruise Japan in March of 2023 and Dan's Elvis tribute performance was the first entertainment offered on the first night of that historical return with public passengers aboard.
For 24 year-old Dan Middleditch this was his first cruise contract and after hearing his performance you will agree it certainly won't be his last and that he has a bright future ahead. You heard him first here!
Here is a review from Tammy: "Haha! He got right up to your camera. He really sings like Elvis!" Avid Elvis fan Diane agreed, "He is just like Elvis!"
Revisiting Beppu - Home of Japan's Best Hot Springs
Kumahachi Aburaya (1863 - 1935) is known as the Father of Tourism in Beppu with his ideas spreading to the rest of Japan. A bronze statue in his honor stands outside the Beppu Train Station. He popularized the slogan, "The Best of Japan: Mount Fuji, Seto Inland Sea, and Beppu Hot Springs" which he inscribed on poles and mounted them along the route to Mount Fuji. He had spent several years in the U.S. where he adopted Christianity and was impressed by the power of advertising. In Japan he dropped flyers over Osaka and Kobe promoting Beppu as a tourist destination. He promoted a national newspaper contest identifying "The new eight views of Japan" with Beppu coming in first. Japan's first tour buses were established by him in Beppu where he also introduced the idea of female tour guides on the buses. Their destination was to take tourists to Beppu's scenic "Hell" hot springs.
In 1911 he acquired a humble Ryokan inn and turned it into a major hotel. He incorporated the Christian principles he had learned in the U.S. in how he treated hotel guests living by the motto,"We should never forget to be kind to travelers."
That same year a Beppu native named Junsaku founded what has become arguably Beppu's most storied Hot Springs, Hyotan Onsen. He dug down to the thermal waters and added stones to construct a small onsen bath in the shape of a gourd for his arthritic wife to help her health improve in the hot mineral waters. Later he expanded it in 1927 to also include a seven story observation tower also in the shape of a gourd. Today that gourd shape (which gourd symbol he borrowed from the flag of a favorite Samurai leader) remains incorporated in the motif of the onsen such as gourd shaped stones and even a gourd shaped vessel pouring out hot onsen water to hard boil eggs.
In enjoying these views of Beppu taken in March of 2023 and March of 2024, see if you can find the "hidden" gourds incorporated into scenes at Hyotan Onsen:

The above pictured Beppu Japan thermal pond waters are in excess of 200 degree F. Steam coming from the ground is used to heat the water in an adjacent aquarium housing tropical fish - the only aquarium in Japan so heated.
Both of the fish seen in the foreground of the below photo taken at the aquarium are carnivorous and are native to the Amazon River. The piranha is fed chicken meat. The long prehistoric tubular one is the largest freshwater fish with scales. It has not changed from its appearance in fossils over 28 million years old and is similar looking to its ancestors which lived over 100 million years ago - co-existing with the dinosaurs. (While the also prehistoric sturgeon is a larger freshwater fish, it does not have scales.)
Some shots from the Orange Rotary Car Show. An Annual tradition in the Orange Plaza. These were all shot on film, the color ones with a Minolta X-700 with a 45mm Rokkor lens that belonged to my grandfather. The black and white ones were taking with a little Olympus XA2, a camera I'm not too fond off because of the lack of focus control, but I got a couple of serviceable shots from it.

Mark (the Bird) Fidrych used to talk to the ball when on the pitcher's mound. He got his nick name for that reason and also that he resembled the BIRD from Sesame Street.
I loved watching him pitch for the Detroit Tigers. He was fun to watch and a heck of a pitcher too
