Views of and at the what remains of Kanazawa Castle that was built during the Edo Samurai Period by the ruling Maeda Clan who were the warlords who ruled Kanazawa and its environs then known as the Kaga Domain. (The some 25 acre Kenroku-en Garden was once the Outer Garden of the Castle which is located next to it.)

Return to Kanazawa's Kenroku-en Garden with its iconic Kotoji-toro Stone Lantern

It has been suggested that the original design of the Kotoji Stone Lantern with its one leg higher was patterned after the bridges used to hold the strings on the traditional Japanese instrument, the Koto.
It is also noteworthy that Kanazawa has gifted to its Sister Cities, including Buffalo, New York, replicas of the Kotoji Stone Lantern. In addition the world famous Japanese Garden in Portland, Oregon also has a replica.
First, take a look at the shape of the bridges on a Koto as to the resemblance. Added photos display how the Stone Lantern is embodied as a symbol of Kanazawa from its manhole covers to its confectionary:
A travel tip for those who may be contemplating rail travel in Japan. While the long heralded Japan Rail Pass has lost some of its appeal due to increased pricing, there still remains the Hokuriku Arch Pass for close to half the price that will also allow 7 days of unlimited travel that can get one from Tokyo to Osaka, Nara, and Kyoto and return. The only catch is that traveling between those cities one must add an additional few hours of time on the Shinkansen by routing through Kanazawa.
As an added bonus in addition to including Kanazawa as a tourist destination, the just extended in March Shinkansen (bullet train) route from Kanazawa toward Osaka/Nara/Kyoto opens up another exciting place to visit, the dinosaur excavation sites and dinosaur museum in Fukui, Japan.
Pictured below are the comparative passes, the allowable routing for the Hokuriku Arch Pass, a poster promoting the just extended Shinkansen route, and dinosaur exhibits at the Fukui Shinkansen train station as seen from the Shinkansen:
We had several Sinclair stations in town when I was growing up. All gone
by the time I started driving. Mostly Mobil and Chevron and Gulf. One of
the abandoned Sinclair's became a fried chicken and pizza carry out. I'd
love to get in a DeLorean and pick up a couple of those pizza pies.

FWIW, the yen hit a recent low (in value) when it climbed to 155 yen to the dollar. Divide the posted price on the pictured rail pass tickets by 155 to see the deal. I should add the Hokuriku Rail Pass has increased 5,000 yen but the Japan Rail Pass remains at 50,000 yen for a week of unlimited travel.

Notice that they are all tied together. I'm guessing this is a corporate team building exercise.

Sweet, wish I was there. Will be watching tonight and tomorrow on TV. Went to the Big Ten championships this year in College Park, MD and it was a blast.
My daughter represented Pennsylvania as a Cherry Blossom Princess this year in Washington DC. She had a great week participating in a variety of events culminating in the parade.

Added views taken last month and in 2019 at Kanazawa's Kenroku-en Garden, recognized as one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan:

A fried bologna sandwich and RC cola would sound good about now.

It is the S&H Green Stamps that caught my eye. I think I still have partially filled book somewhere.

Hard for me to look at that picture because of my vertigo.
