Today is Alaska Day. Here is some of the acreage Seward purchased from Russia back in 1867. The U.S. Flag was raised for the first time in Alaska (at Sitka) on this day that year.
Whose statue is that on the monument? I was also wondering why they were pointing a cannon at him.

I realize that we're looking at Thanksgiving dinner, but during a Depression
they were eating like royalty. Most of the the Southerners I spoke to didn't
eat that well until after the war.

That's George Washington on the monument.
I took this at Washington's Crossing and you would think they would aim the cannon towards New Jersey.
